Gateway Worship is the worship ministry of Gateway Church, the multi-campus charismatic megachurch in Southlake, Texas, that Robert Morris founded in 2000. It made Revelation Song famous with Kari Jobe, gave churches O The Blood, and has recorded live albums since the mid-2000s. Catholics may sing the Gateway songs whose words are true, judging each on its text, while knowing the church's recent history: Gateway's founder pleaded guilty in 2025 to sexually abusing a child in the 1980s. No Gateway Worship singer or musician has been accused in that case.
This review keeps the band and the scandal clearly apart. It covers the band's history and songs, what Gateway Church teaches, a Catholic reading of the lyrics, the Mass rules, the documented record of the Robert Morris case and the lawsuits that followed, our verdict, and a habit you can begin today.

Who Are Gateway Worship?
Gateway Worship is a team of worship pastors, singers and musicians who lead worship at Gateway Church's campuses around Dallas-Fort Worth and record under the Gateway Worship name. It works as a collective: different leaders front different songs, and the label releases English, Spanish and Portuguese albums.
Gateway Church was founded in 2000 in Southlake, a suburb between Dallas and Fort Worth, and grew into one of the largest churches in the United States. Lifeway Research and the Hartford Institute listed it in 2023 as the ninth largest in the country, with about 25,000 weekly worshippers, as Religion News Service reported.
Thomas Miller served as Gateway's founding senior worship pastor and co-wrote O The Blood. Kari Jobe served at Gateway as a worship pastor and sang with Gateway Worship as her solo career grew. Mark Harris, formerly of the vocal group 4Him, later led campus worship, and worship leaders such as Zach Neese and David Moore have written and led for the team.
The band's story is tied to the church, and the church's story is tied to its founder. Our profile of Robert Morris, his teaching and his fall covers him in full. This page stays with the music and gives only the documented church context.

What Does Gateway Worship Sound Like, and What Are Its Biggest Songs?
Gateway Worship sounds like a large Texas church on a Sunday: polished pop-rock and ballads, a strong choir-and-congregation feel, and songs written to be sung by thousands, often recorded live in the church's own auditoriums. Here are the songs most associated with the band, with titles and facts only, and the Scripture under each.
- Revelation Song. Written by Jennie Lee Riddle and first made popular by Gateway Worship and Kari Jobe, it later became a radio hit for other artists. It sets the heavenly worship of Revelation 4 and 5 to music: the living creatures, the elders and the Lamb who was slain.
- O The Blood. Co-written by Thomas Miller, it meditates on the saving blood of Christ (Hebrews 9:22; 1 Peter 1:18-19).
- Come Thou Fount, Come Thou King. Robert Robinson's 1758 hymn Come Thou Fount with a new refrain added.
- The More I Seek You. A love song of intimacy with God, close to Psalm 27:4, "one thing have I asked of the Lord."
- You Are For Me. Sung by Kari Jobe, it rests on Romans 8:31, God is for us.
- Great Great God, Forever Yours, Walls and Greater Than. Title songs of the band's most successful albums from 2011 to 2018.
Gateway also released a series of Songs from Gateway Devotions albums named after Robert Morris's sermon series, including The Blessed Life in 2015. Those albums tie the music most closely to his teaching.

Gateway Church teaches nondenominational, charismatic evangelical doctrine: the Bible as the only infallible Word of God, the Trinity, Christ's atoning death, salvation as a free gift received by faith, and the present-day work and gifts of the Holy Spirit. Its published beliefs include these points.
- Scripture. The Bible "is alone the only infallible inspired Word of God", with authority that is "ultimate, final, and eternal."
- Baptism. Water baptism is "the outward sign of what God has already done in the individual's life."
- Communion. The Lord's Supper is "a commemoration of the death of the Lord."
- The last things. Gateway affirms Christ's personal second coming, the resurrection, "the Millennium" and the final judgment.
- Marriage. Gateway affirms two sexes, male and female, and marriage between one man and one woman.
Giving and the tithe
Robert Morris became nationally known for The Blessed Life, his book and teaching on generosity, which presents the tithe, a tenth of income, as the starting point of Christian giving and links generous giving to God's blessing. Critics have long said that this teaching drifts toward the prosperity gospel.
Charismatic life
Gateway practises the charismatic gifts, has close ties to The King's University, and was shaped by Jack Hayford, who served Gateway as an apostolic elder before his death in 2023. For background, see our guides to the charismatic movement and nondenominational churches.
A Catholic Review of Gateway's Lyrics and Theology
Gateway Worship's best songs are biblical adoration that a Catholic can pray gladly. The differences lie mostly in Gateway Church's teaching on the sacraments, authority and money.
What is true
- The heavenly liturgy. Revelation Song is the throne room of Revelation 4 and 5. The Catechism reads those same chapters as the heavenly liturgy (CCC 1137) and teaches that "in the earthly liturgy we share in a foretaste of that heavenly liturgy" (CCC 1090). Catholics sing the angels' hymn at every Mass in the Holy, Holy.
- The Precious Blood. O The Blood belongs to a theme Catholics love: the blood of Christ that redeems (1 Peter 1:18-19). The Church has a Litany of the Most Precious Blood, and in Holy Communion Catholics receive that Blood (John 6:54).
- God is for us. You Are For Me and Great Great God are Romans 8 and the psalms in modern form.
What is missing
- The altar. Gateway's songs speak of the cross and the blood, rarely of the altar where Catholics believe that one sacrifice is made present (CCC 1367).
- Mary and the saints. They are absent, as in nearly all evangelical worship.
Where Catholic teaching differs
- Baptism. Gateway calls baptism an outward sign of what has already happened. The Church teaches that baptism itself forgives sin and gives new birth (CCC 1213, CCC 1263).
- The Lord's Supper. Gateway calls it a commemoration. The Church teaches that Christ is present "truly, really, and substantially" in the Eucharist (CCC 1374). Read our guide to the Eucharist.
- Scripture alone. The Church receives Scripture together with Tradition, interpreted by the teaching office (CCC 95).
- The Millennium. Evangelicals who affirm "the Millennium" usually expect a future thousand-year earthly reign. The Church reads Revelation 20 differently and warns against millenarianism (CCC 676). See our guide to the millennium.
- The tithe. Catholics are bound to help provide for the needs of the Church (CCC 2043; Code of Canon Law, canon 222), and Scripture praises the cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7). The universal Church sets no fixed percentage and never ties giving to a promise of material reward.
Can Catholics Sing Gateway Worship Songs?
Yes, Catholics may sing Gateway Worship songs whose words are true, in private prayer, prayer groups and parish events. Each song should be judged on its own text, and at Mass the Church's rules apply.
Arguments for
- Revelation Song and O The Blood are Scripture set to music, and the Church recognises "elements of sanctification and of truth" outside her visible structure (CCC 819).
- The musicians who wrote and led these songs are not accused of anything. A song does not become false because a pastor sinned.
- Catholic charismatic prayer groups have long used this style of song fruitfully.
Arguments for caution
- Conscience about support. Streams and licences pay royalties to rights holders, Gateway's publishing among them. Some Catholics, especially survivors of abuse, will choose other music. Respect that conscience in your parish.
- The Gateway Devotions albums were built around Robert Morris's sermon series. Judge those songs with extra care.
- Lex orandi, lex credendi. What we pray shapes what we believe (CCC 1124).
The Mass rules
- Sacrosanctum Concilium 112 calls the Church's musical tradition "a treasure of inestimable value."
- Sacrosanctum Concilium 116 and GIRM 41 give Gregorian chant pride of place, other things being equal, without excluding other sacred music.
- Sacrosanctum Concilium 121 requires sung texts to conform to Catholic doctrine and to come chiefly from Scripture and the liturgy.
- GIRM 366 forbids replacing the chants of the Order of Mass with other songs. Revelation Song may never stand in for the Holy, Holy.
Where a pastor judges it fitting, a song like Revelation Song may serve as a hymn at another moment of a parish Mass. Many parishes will prefer music without a connection to Gateway at this time. Both choices can be made in good faith.

Gateway Church's founder, Robert Morris, pleaded guilty in October 2025 to sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl in the 1980s, after she went public in June 2024. Several lawsuits followed. This is church context. No Gateway Worship singer or musician has been accused of misconduct in any report we found.
The disclosure and resignation (June 2024)
On 14 June 2024 The Wartburg Watch, a blog that reports on church abuse, published Cindy Clemishire's account that Morris, then a travelling evangelist in his early twenties, began abusing her at her family's Oklahoma home on Christmas night 1982, when she was 12, and that it continued for several years. Morris issued a statement acknowledging a "moral failure" with a "young lady" decades earlier, as NBC News reported. Gateway's first statement spoke of an "inappropriate relationship". The elders then said that before 14 June they had not known her age or how long the abuse lasted, and church leaders later called an earlier statement "clearly incorrect", as The Roys Report summarised. Morris resigned on 18 June 2024, and the elders hired the law firm Haynes and Boone to investigate.
The investigation (November 2024)
On 3 November 2024 elder Tra Willbanks told the congregation that the investigation had found elders and employees who knew before 14 June 2024 that Clemishire was 12 at the time of the abuse, and that all but three elders had some awareness of Morris's history with her. Four elders were removed, and the church ruled that staff would no longer serve as elders, as Religion News Service reported via MinistryWatch on 5 November 2024. The church did not name the removed elders. Thomas Miller, Gateway Worship's founding worship pastor, had moved to an executive pastor role years earlier. No individual findings about any named elder were published.
The criminal case (2025 to 2026)
In March 2025 an Oklahoma multicounty grand jury indicted Morris on five counts of lewd or indecent acts with a child. He first pleaded not guilty. On 2 October 2025, in Osage County District Court, he pleaded guilty to all five counts under a plea agreement: a ten-year sentence with all but six months suspended, registration as a sex offender, and restitution to Clemishire. Speaking in court, Clemishire told him she had been a child, rejecting his description of her as a "young lady." Morris was released from the Osage County jail on 31 March 2026 to serve the rest of his sentence on probation in Texas. In a statement released by his attorney, he said, "I am deeply sorry," according to the Associated Press. Because he pleaded guilty, the abuse is an admitted and adjudicated crime.
The tithing lawsuit (2024 to 2026): dismissed
In October 2024 two member families sued Gateway and Morris in federal court, alleging that the church had misrepresented how tithes were used, including a claim that 15 percent went to global missions and Jewish ministry partners. Gateway and Morris denied the claims. In June 2026 US District Judge Amos Mazzant dismissed the suit, holding that the First Amendment bars courts from deciding how a church spends donated funds, as KERA News and MinistryWatch reported. The court made no finding that the allegations were true. Gateway's attorney said the ruling protected the church's religious freedom.
Other cases
- Morris's retirement claim. Morris sued Gateway in 2025 seeking retirement benefits, and Gateway rejected his demands. In May 2026 the parties dismissed the state lawsuit and agreed to take the dispute to arbitration, as KERA and CBS Texas reported.
- Clemishire's defamation suit. In June 2025 Clemishire and her father sued Gateway, Morris, his wife and current and former leaders over the church's public statements. The defendants deny the claims. In August 2026 a Dallas appeals court ordered most claims dismissed, largely on First Amendment grounds, and in September 2026 the Texas Supreme Court stayed that order while it considers her petition, as The Roys Report reported. The case is pending, and no court has found that anyone defamed her.
The church today
Gateway named four interim elders in January 2025. On 25 May 2025 it announced Daniel Floyd, founder of Lifepoint Church in Virginia, as senior pastor, and he was installed in August 2025, as KERA and The Christian Post reported.
A Catholic word on this
The Catechism names the sexual abuse of children by adults entrusted with their care as a grave offence, "compounded by the scandalous harm done to the physical and moral integrity of the young" (CCC 2389). Catholics must speak about this with humility, because our own Church has failed children and covered for abusers, as our guide to church scandals sets out. The lesson is the same for every church: believe children, report to the police, and never let a leader's gifts shield him from the truth.

Our Verdict: Should a Catholic Still Listen to Gateway Worship?
Gateway Worship's best songs are sound and worth praying, and the band itself carries no documented scandal. The church behind it went through a grave and well-documented failure of leadership. Our rating: good songs, use with discernment, and respect anyone who chooses not to.
- Where Gateway helps. Revelation Song is one of the finest modern settings of the heavenly worship of Revelation. O The Blood points straight to the Precious Blood of Christ. These songs can lead a Catholic toward the Mass.
- Where to be careful. The church's teaching on tithing and blessing needs a Catholic counterweight, and the Gateway Devotions albums are tied to Robert Morris's sermons. Survivors of abuse may find this music painful, and their wounds come first.
- Fairness to the musicians. No singer or musician of Gateway Worship has been accused of misconduct. Do not blame them for their founder's crime.
Which Catholic Music Should You Pair With Gateway Worship?
If Revelation Song and O The Blood move you, the Catholic tradition has music on the same themes that has been sung for centuries.
- The Te Deum. The ancient hymn of the heavenly court, "To you all angels, all the powers of heaven", sung by the Church since the early centuries. It is Revelation Song's older sister.
- Glory Be to Jesus. A traditional hymn to the Precious Blood, translated from Italian by Edward Caswall and sung in Catholic parishes.
- The Benedictine Monks of Norcia. Their chant album Benedicta offers Marian chant from the monastery in St Benedict's birthplace.
- Matt Maher and Sarah Kroger. Catholic songwriters who write in the modern worship style for Catholic prayer.
- The Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles. Sung prayer from a community of contemplative sisters.

What Can You Learn From Gateway, and What Habit Should You Start Today?
Gateway's story teaches that beautiful worship and hidden sin can sit side by side for decades, and that every believer needs a faith anchored in Christ and his Church. Start a habit today that puts those roots down.
Three lessons
- Sin hidden is sin unhealed. "Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed" (Luke 12:2). Confess your own sins now, while it is a mercy to do so.
- Protect the little ones first. Jesus warned that anyone who causes a little one to sin would be better off with a millstone round his neck (Matthew 18:6). Know your parish's safeguarding rules and follow them.
- Worship the Lamb on the throne. Revelation Song sets every eye on the One who was slain and lives. Keep your eyes there, whoever holds the microphone.
A seven-day Precious Blood habit
Fifteen minutes a day. Begin tonight. No one knows the day or the hour (Mark 13:32).
- Day 1. Read Revelation 4 and 5 slowly. Pray the Holy, Holy, Holy as the angels do.
- Day 2. Read Hebrews 9:11-14. Make a full examination of conscience and book a confession.
- Day 3. Pray the Litany of the Most Precious Blood, or simply repeat, "Precious Blood of Jesus, save us."
- Day 4. Pray by name for every victim of abuse in the Church, and for justice and healing.
- Day 5. Read 2 Corinthians 9:6-15. Give quietly to a parish or charity need, with no thought of return.
- Day 6. Make a visit to the Blessed Sacrament for fifteen minutes of silence.
- Day 7. Go to Mass. At the elevation of the chalice, say silently, "My Lord and my God."
Lamb of God, who was slain and who lives for ever, you alone are worthy. Wash me in your Precious Blood. Heal those who were harmed by people who spoke in your name, and give them justice and peace. Keep me honest before you, and keep my eyes on your throne. Amen.
