Novena for Marriage: Prayers for a Future Spouse and a Struggling Marriage
Two complete nine-day novenas: to St. Raphael for the spouse you are waiting for, and to St. Rita and the Holy Family for the marriage you are fighting for
A novena for marriage is nine consecutive days of prayer for a marriage: for the spouse you hope to meet, for a marriage in crisis, or for a good marriage you want to protect. Catholics praying for a future spouse traditionally turn to St. Raphael the Archangel, who guided Tobias to his wife Sarah in the Book of Tobit. Catholics praying for a struggling marriage turn to St. Rita of Cascia, who endured a hard marriage, and to the Holy Family of Nazareth. This page gives both novenas in full, nine days each, with the traditional prayers and the practical help that should go with them.
Marriages left alone drift apart, one silent evening at a time. If yours is hurting, today is the day to fight for it, on your knees and in a counsellor's office. If you are waiting for a spouse, today is the day to hand that longing to God. No one knows the day or the hour (Mark 13:32). Start now.
Pray for your marriage every day, long before the next crisis. Pro gives you audio-guided prayer sessions you can pray together at night, calming audio devotionals, in-depth Bible studies, a circle of believers praying with you, and real counselling sessions with a qualified therapist. Get Pro. $49 once, lifetime access, 30-day money-back guarantee.

1. What Is a Novena for Marriage?
A novena for marriage is a nine-day prayer for one of three intentions: to find a spouse, to heal a marriage in trouble, or to strengthen a marriage that is doing well. The method is the same as any novena (see our guide on how to pray a novena): one intention, a set prayer, nine days in a row, with an Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be each day.
Marriage deserves this kind of prayer because the Church teaches it is a sacrament, a covenant in which Christ Himself is present. The Catechism describes the matrimonial covenant as one "by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life" (CCC 1601). A partnership of the whole of life is too big to carry without grace. For the full Catholic teaching on the sacrament, including annulments, read our guide to marriage.
Choose your novena:
- Waiting for a husband or wife: the St. Raphael novena for a future spouse.
- A marriage in trouble: the novena to St. Rita and the Holy Family for a struggling marriage. If you are in danger, read safety first before anything else.
- A good marriage you want to protect: pray the struggling-marriage novena's daily prayers as a check-up, and use the section on praying together.
2. St. Raphael and the Story of Tobias and Sarah
St. Raphael is the patron of people looking for a spouse because, in the Book of Tobit, God sent him to lead young Tobias to his future wife, Sarah, and to heal her. Raphael's name means "God heals," and he describes himself as "one of the seven holy angels who present the prayers of the saints" (Tobit 12:15). His feast is 29 September, shared with St. Michael and St. Gabriel.
The story is worth knowing. Sarah, a young woman in Ecbatana, had been given in marriage seven times, and each husband died on the wedding night, killed by the demon Asmodeus (Tobit 3:8). Mocked and grieving, she prayed to God in despair. Far away in Nineveh, the blind and faithful Tobit prayed too. "The prayer of both was heard," and Raphael was sent to heal them both (Tobit 3:16-17). Disguised as a travelling companion, Raphael guided Tobit's son Tobias on a journey, taught him how to drive away the demon, and led him to Sarah, telling him, "she was destined for you from eternity" (Tobit 6:17). On their wedding night, Tobias and Sarah prayed together before anything else, and they lived. The prayer they prayed is still read at Catholic weddings.
The Book of Tobit is part of the Catholic and Orthodox Old Testament; most Protestant Bibles place it in the Apocrypha or omit it. Our guide to the deuterocanonical books explains why. For more on the archangel himself, see our profile of St. Raphael.
3. Prayers for a Future Spouse
The two prayers below are prayed every day of the St. Raphael novena. The first is Scripture, the prayer of Tobias and Sarah on their wedding night. The second is a traditional devotional prayer to St. Raphael as the Angel of Happy Meetings, widely prayed by Catholics looking for a spouse; its author is uncertain.
The Prayer of Tobias and Sarah
Blessed art thou, O God of our fathers, and blessed be thy holy and glorious name for ever. Let the heavens and all thy creatures bless thee. Thou madest Adam and gavest him Eve his wife as a helper and support. From them the race of mankind has sprung. Thou didst say, 'It is not good that the man should be alone; let us make a helper for him like himself.' And now, O Lord, I am not taking this sister of mine because of lust, but with sincerity. Grant that I may find mercy and may grow old together with her. Amen.
Tobit 8:5-8 (RSV). Sarah answered, "Amen."
Prayer to St. Raphael, Angel of Happy Meetings
O Raphael, lead us towards those we are waiting for, those who are waiting for us. Raphael, Angel of Happy Meetings, lead us by the hand towards those we are looking for. May all our movements, all their movements, be guided by your Light and transfigured by your Joy. Angel Guide of Tobias, lay the request we now address to you at the feet of Him on whose unveiled Face you are privileged to gaze. [Name your request.] Remember the weak, you who are strong, you whose home lies beyond the region of thunder, in a land that is always peaceful, always serene, and bright with the resplendent glory of God. Amen.
Traditional devotional prayer to St. Raphael; author uncertain
A Prayer for My Future Husband or Wife
Father, if You are calling me to marriage, I pray tonight for the person You have in mind for me, wherever they are. Protect them, grow them in faith and keep them close to You. Prepare my heart for them as You prepare theirs for me. Make me the kind of person a good spouse would be glad to find. Give me patience, purity and good judgment, and the courage to walk away from anyone who would lead me from You. Amen.
Original prayer written for Catholic/Christian. "It is not good that the man should be alone." (Genesis 2:18)
4. The St. Raphael Novena for a Future Spouse: Nine Days
Each day follows the story of Tobias and Sarah. Pray the day's prayer (original, written for this page), then the Prayer of Tobias and Sarah, the Prayer to St. Raphael, and an Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be. Many people pray this novena from 20 to 28 September, ending on the eve of the feast of the archangels, but any nine days will do.
Day 1: Sarah's Sorrow
Lord, Sarah of Ecbatana grieved so deeply over her lost hopes of marriage that she wanted to die, and instead she poured out her heart to You in prayer, and You heard her that same day. I bring You my loneliness and my longing for a husband or wife. You know the nights it hurts most. Hear me as You heard Sarah. St. Raphael, pray for me.
"The prayer of both was heard in the presence of the glory of the great God. And Raphael was sent to heal the two of them." (Tobit 3:16-17)
Day 2: Tobias Sets Out
Lord, Tobias set out on a journey at his father's word, with no idea he was walking toward his wife. Help me to walk faithfully in the life I have now: my work, my family, my parish, my friendships. Lead me where You want me to go, and let me meet the right person on the road of ordinary obedience.
"Go with this man; God who dwells in heaven will prosper your way, and may his angel attend you." (Tobit 5:16)
Day 3: The Guide Nobody Recognised
St. Raphael, you walked beside Tobias for the whole journey, and he thought you were an ordinary travelling companion. Be my unseen guide. Steer my steps, my conversations and even my dating apps. Keep me from people who would lead me away from God, and lead me toward the one who will lead me closer to Him.
"I am Raphael, one of the seven holy angels who present the prayers of the saints and enter into the presence of the glory of the Holy One." (Tobit 12:15)
Day 4: The Fish in the River
Lord, when the great fish leapt from the Tigris, Tobias was terrified, and Raphael told him to catch it, because what frightened him would become the means of healing. Take away my fear of rejection, of commitment, of being known. Give me courage to take reasonable risks: to say yes to an introduction, to ask someone out, to be honest about what I want.
"Catch the fish." (Tobit 6:3)
Day 5: God Heals
St. Raphael, your name means "God heals." Sarah carried a terrible history into her marriage, and God healed it. I carry wounds too: past relationships, my parents' marriage, my own sins and regrets. Bring them to the Lord for healing before I bring them into a marriage. Lead me to confession and, if I need it, to good counsel.
"He heals the brokenhearted, and binds up their wounds." (Psalm 147:3)
Day 6: Purity
Lord, on their wedding night Tobias prayed that he was taking Sarah with sincerity and without lust. Make my heart pure while I wait. Give me the strength to keep chastity, to guard my eyes and to date in a way that honours the person in front of me. Where I have fallen, forgive me and restore me.
"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." (Matthew 5:8)
Day 7: Family and Blessing
Lord, Tobias and Sarah married with the blessing of their parents and families, and their joy spread to everyone around them. Bless my family and the family of my future spouse. Heal any division that would make a marriage harder. Help me to honour my parents while I grow toward a home of my own.
"Honor your father and your mother." (Exodus 20:12)
Day 8: God's Timing
Lord, Raphael told Tobias that Sarah had been destined for him from eternity. I do not know who or when, or whether You are calling me to marriage at all. I trust Your timing over mine. If marriage is my vocation, prepare me and my future spouse for each other. If You are calling me elsewhere, give me the courage to say yes.
"Do not be afraid, for she was destined for you from eternity." (Tobit 6:17)
Day 9: Thanksgiving Before the Answer
Lord, at the end of the journey Raphael told Tobias and his father to bless You and give You thanks before all the living. I give You thanks now, before I see the answer. Thank You for the love You have already given me, through family and friends, and above all through Your Son. Keep me faithful in waiting. St. Raphael, Angel of Happy Meetings, pray for me. Amen.
"Praise God and give thanks to him; exalt him and give thanks to him in the presence of all the living for what he has done for you." (Tobit 12:6)
When the nine days end, keep praying the Prayer to St. Raphael each week, and pray the novena again whenever the longing returns. Thank God for every good friendship and introduction along the way.

While you pray for a spouse, become the person a good spouse would want to marry, and put yourself where good spouses are found. Prayer opens the door. You still have to walk through it.
- Discern your vocation honestly. Ask God whether He is calling you to marriage, to priesthood or religious life, or to a single life given to Him. Talk to a priest.
- Grow in faith now. Go to Mass, go to confession, pray daily. A good Catholic spouse will be looking for that in you.
- Get out of the house. Young adult groups, parish ministries, Catholic conferences, volunteering, friends' gatherings. Raphael led Tobias on a journey, and he did not find Sarah at home.
- Use dating apps wisely, if at all. Our guide to Christian dating apps covers which ones and how.
- Keep chastity. Purity before marriage protects your heart and your future marriage. Our guides to sex before marriage and living together before marriage explain the Church's teaching and why it is good news.
- Heal what needs healing. Old relationships, family wounds or an addiction will follow you into a marriage. Deal with them now, with confession and, where needed, counselling.
- Be open. The person God has in mind may not match your list. Tobias did not expect a bride on a business trip.

6. Praying for a Struggling Marriage: St. Rita and the Holy Family
Catholics praying for a marriage in crisis turn to St. Rita of Cascia and the Holy Family of Nazareth. St. Rita (about 1381 to 1457) was married young to a harsh and violent man, endured years of a hard marriage, prayed him toward conversion, and then lost him to a murder in a family feud; she forgave his killers and later became an Augustinian nun. She is the patron of difficult marriages and impossible causes. Read her full story in our profile of St. Rita. Her example is endurance in prayer. It is never a reason to stay in danger, and the Church asks no one to do that (see safety first).
The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph is the model of every Christian home, and it was a home under pressure: an unexpected pregnancy, poverty, a birth among animals, a flight from a murderous king, life as refugees, and three days searching for a lost child. Holy does not mean easy. Pope Francis closed his 2016 exhortation on love in the family, Amoris Laetitia, with a prayer to the Holy Family, given below. It is the daily traditional prayer of this novena.
Prayer to the Holy Family (Pope Francis)
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, in you we contemplate the splendour of true love; to you we turn with trust. Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that our families too may be places of communion and prayer, authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic churches. Holy Family of Nazareth, may families never again experience violence, rejection and division; may all who have been hurt or scandalized find ready comfort and healing. Holy Family of Nazareth, make us once more mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the family, and its beauty in God's plan. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, graciously hear our prayer. Amen.
Traditional approved text: the closing prayer of Pope Francis's apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia (2016), 325
Prayer to St. Rita for a Struggling Marriage
St. Rita, you lived for years in a hard marriage, prayed your husband back to God, and forgave the men who killed him. You know what it is to love someone who is difficult, and to keep a family from tearing itself apart. Pray for my marriage. [Name your spouse and your need.] Ask Jesus to soften both our hearts, beginning with mine, to heal the wounds we have given each other, and to lead us to the help we need. If I am in danger, obtain for me the courage to get safe. St. Rita, patron of difficult marriages and impossible causes, pray for us. Amen.

7. The Novena for a Struggling Marriage: Nine Days
Pray the day's prayer (original, written for this page), then the Prayer to the Holy Family, the Prayer to St. Rita, and an Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be. Pray it alone if you must. Pray it with your spouse if you can, even if all you can manage together is the Our Father.
Day 1: Naming the Wound
Lord, our marriage is in trouble, and I am tired of pretending it is not. I name it before You now: what has happened, what has been said, what has been broken. You already know it all. Give me the honesty to see our marriage as it is, and the hope to believe You can still work in it.
"Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you." (Psalm 55:22)
Day 2: My Own Part
Jesus, You told us to take the log out of our own eye first. I have my own part in this: words I should not have said, things I should have done, ways I withdrew. Show me my share honestly, without excusing my spouse's wrongs and without drowning in guilt. Lead me to confession this week.
"First take the log out of your own eye." (Matthew 7:5)
Day 3: Forgiveness
Lord, I have been hurt, and I do not feel like forgiving. I choose to begin anyway, because You forgave me. Forgiveness does not mean pretending nothing happened or putting myself in harm's way. It means handing the debt to You. Start the forgiveness in me that I cannot start myself, and give us both the grace to forgive.
"Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you." (Ephesians 4:32)
Day 4: Words and Silence
Holy Spirit, our words have become weapons, or we have stopped talking at all. Teach me to be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger. Give me the right words at the right time, and the self-control to stay silent when silence is wiser. Open a door to one honest, calm conversation.
"Let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger." (James 1:19)
Day 5: We Have No Wine
Mary, at Cana you noticed that the wine had run out before anyone else did, and you told your Son. Our marriage has run dry. Tell Him for us. Jesus, You turned water into wine; do for us what we cannot do for ourselves. We will do whatever You tell us.
"His mother said to him, 'They have no wine.'" (John 2:3)
Day 6: The Holy Family Under Pressure
Holy Family of Nazareth, you knew poverty, danger, exile and the loss of a child for three days. Your home was holy and it was still hard. Pray for our home under its pressures: money, work, children, illness, in-laws, tiredness. Teach us to face them together, as allies instead of enemies.
"Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt." (Matthew 2:13)
Day 7: Fidelity
Lord, protect our marriage from every third party: an affair, an emotional attachment, pornography, an addiction, a screen. Where there has been betrayal, give the injured spouse justice and healing, and give the one who betrayed true repentance. Guard my own heart and eyes today.
"Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled." (Hebrews 13:4)
Day 8: The Children
Lord, our children see and hear more than we think. Protect them from our conflict. Keep us from using them as messengers or weapons. Whatever happens between us, let them know they are loved by both of us and by You. St. Rita, who prayed for your sons with all your heart, pray for our children.
"Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged." (Colossians 3:21)
Day 9: Renewal
Lord, on our wedding day we promised to love and honour each other for life. Renew that promise in us. If we can begin again, show us how, and lead us to the help we need. If my spouse will not come back, keep me faithful to You and lead me through what comes next. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, St. Rita, pray for us. Amen.
"Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." (1 Corinthians 13:7)
Prayer alone rarely saves a marriage in deep trouble, and God usually works through people. Pair this novena with the practical help in the next sections. And if the problem is an affair, read our guide to adultery and emotional affairs.

If your spouse is hurting you or your children, your first duty is to get safe, and the Church supports you in doing it. The Catechism teaches that separation of spouses "can be legitimate in certain cases provided for by canon law" (CCC 2383), and canon law recognises grave mental or physical danger to a spouse or the children as a legitimate cause for leaving (Code of Canon Law, canon 1153). St. Rita endured her marriage in a different century, and nobody holds her up as a reason to stay in danger. Pray from a safe place.

9. Retrouvaille, Counselling and Other Real Help
The best-known Catholic help for a marriage in serious trouble is Retrouvaille, and the best general help is a good counsellor. Use both if you can.
- Retrouvaille (French for "rediscovery") is a program for couples in hurting marriages that began in Quebec, Canada, in 1977, first as a weekend for French-speaking couples. It is Catholic in origin and open to couples of any faith or none. It runs as a weekend followed by a series of follow-up sessions, led by couples who have been through their own crises, with a priest or counsellor. Search for Retrouvaille with the name of your country or diocese to find the next weekend near you.
- A Catholic marriage counsellor or therapist. A counsellor who shares your faith will work with your vows. Directories such as CatholicTherapists.com list them; your diocese's family life office can also recommend people.
- Your parish priest. Talk to him. Priests hear about struggling marriages every week, and he can point you to local help.
- Confession. Go yourself, even if your spouse will not. A marriage changes when one spouse changes.
- Addiction help. If drink, drugs, gambling or pornography is driving the crisis, it has to be treated directly. Our guides to overcoming pornography, gambling and drinking each include a free quiz.
Counselling is part of Pro. Alongside audio-guided prayer sessions, audio devotionals, Bible studies and a circle of believers, Pro includes real sessions with a qualified therapist, plus the Freedom Programme tracks for pornography, gambling, alcohol and drugs. Get Pro for $49, once, with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
10. How to Pray Together as a Couple
The simplest way for a couple to pray together is to pray one short prayer, out loud, at the same time every day. Most couples never pray together because they think it has to be long or eloquent. It does not.
- Start with one Our Father at night, holding hands. That is enough for the first week.
- Add one sentence each: "Thank You for..." and "Please help us with..."
- Pray for each other by name, aloud. It is hard to stay angry at someone you have just prayed for.
- Go to Mass together on Sunday, and sit together.
- Pray this novena together once a year, perhaps around your anniversary.
Our guide to marriage has a fuller section on how married couples start praying together.
11. When Your Spouse Has Left or Wants a Divorce
If your spouse has left or wants a divorce, you can still pray for your marriage, and you can still pray for yourself. God has not left you. Many spouses have prayed for years for a husband or wife who walked out, and some of those marriages were restored. Others were not, and those who prayed found God faithful in the loss.
Keep praying this novena, adapting it for yourself. Get support from your parish and from friends. Look after your children's stability. Do not make huge decisions in the first weeks. And learn what the Church actually teaches: a civil divorce does not by itself bar you from Communion, and the Church's tribunals examine whether a valid marriage existed through the annulment process. Our guide to divorce and the Catholic Church covers Communion, dating after divorce, protecting children and forgiving an ex-spouse, and our guide to marriage explains annulments step by step.
Grief after a marriage ends is real grief. Our guide to grief and our guide to loneliness may help in the months ahead.
12. How Protestants and the Orthodox Pray for Marriage
All Christians pray for marriage; they differ on whether to ask the saints and angels to join them. Most Protestants pray directly to God for a spouse or for a struggling marriage, often using Scripture such as 1 Corinthians 13 or Ephesians 5, and many evangelical churches run strong marriage courses. Because most Protestant Bibles do not include Tobit, St. Raphael's role is largely unknown in Protestant devotion. Protestants generally permit divorce and remarriage in cases of adultery or abandonment, a point on which they differ from Catholic teaching.
The Orthodox, like Catholics, ask the saints and angels to pray for them, Tobit is in their Bible, and their wedding service, the Crowning, places crowns on the bride and groom as a sign of their shared calling and the self-sacrifice marriage demands. For the full comparison, see our guides to Catholic and Protestant belief and the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best novena for marriage?
For a future spouse, Catholics traditionally pray a novena to St. Raphael the Archangel, who guided Tobias to his wife Sarah in the Book of Tobit. For a struggling marriage, they pray to St. Rita of Cascia, patron of difficult marriages, and to the Holy Family of Nazareth.
Which saint do you pray to for a spouse?
St. Raphael the Archangel is the traditional patron of people looking for a spouse, because God sent him to lead Tobias to Sarah. St. Anne, St. Anthony of Padua and St. Joseph are also invoked by Catholics hoping to marry.
What is the prayer of Tobias and Sarah?
The prayer of Tobias and Sarah is the prayer the couple prayed on their wedding night in Tobit 8:5-8. It blesses God, recalls the creation of Adam and Eve, says Tobias is taking Sarah with sincerity and not with lust, and asks that they may find mercy and grow old together.
What is a good prayer for a struggling marriage?
A good prayer for a struggling marriage asks God to soften both hearts, beginning with your own, to heal the wounds you have given each other, and to lead you to the help you need. Many Catholics pray to St. Rita and pray Pope Francis's prayer to the Holy Family from Amoris Laetitia.
What is Retrouvaille?
Retrouvaille is a program for couples in hurting marriages that began in Quebec, Canada, in 1977. It is Catholic in origin and open to couples of any faith. It consists of a weekend followed by follow-up sessions, led by couples who have come through their own marriage crises.
Does the Church say I must stay in an abusive marriage?
No. The Catechism teaches that separation can be legitimate in certain cases (CCC 2383), and canon law recognises grave danger to a spouse or children as a legitimate cause for leaving (canon 1153). Get safe first, and call a domestic violence hotline or emergency services if you are in danger.
Can I pray a novena for my marriage if my spouse will not pray with me?
Yes. You can pray a novena for your marriage alone, for yourself and for your spouse by name. Many marriages have changed because one spouse began to pray and to change, and God hears your prayer whether or not your spouse joins you.
