How We Judged the Apps
We judged each app on five things a praying Catholic actually needs.
- Fidelity. Catholic prayers and teaching, from a known publisher.
- Daily usefulness. Does it give you something to pray today in 5 to 15 minutes?
- Cost over five years. A $59.99 yearly plan is $299.95 over five years at today's price; a $9.99 one-time app stays $9.99.
- Offline use. Can you pray on a plane or a weak signal?
- Focus. Does the app help you pray, or tempt you to browse?
We did not use star ratings, which mix bug reports with prayer. Every feature claim below comes from the publisher's own listing.
Best Guided Audio Library: Hallow
Hallow is the strongest app for guided audio prayer. Its App Store listing describes over 10,000 sessions, more than 50 guides, and most prayers in 5, 10 or 15 minute versions, with offline downloads, reminders and a journal. The free version includes Bible in a Year and Catechism in a Year with Fr. Mike Schmitz, the Daily Rosary, Divine Mercy and the Daily Gospel. The paid plan, $69.99 a year or $9.99 a month in the US, adds the sleep section, music radio, Pray25 and Pray40, challenges and audiobooks.
Choose Hallow if you want variety, famous narrators and seasonal challenges. Skip the paid plan if you only use the free sections.
Best Free All-in-One: Laudate
Laudate packs an unusually wide range of free Catholic content into one app. Its listing covers daily Mass readings with the saint of the day, the Liturgy of the Hours in English and Latin, the New American Bible plus a Douay-Rheims Bible for offline use, an interactive Rosary and over a dozen chaplets, the Stations of the Cross, the Catechism, Vatican II documents and canon law, confession guides, podcasts for daily meditation, and a live-streamed daily Mass. It is free.
Choose Laudate if you want one free reference app for everything. It is text-first, so pair it with an audio app if you pray on the move.
Best for the Bible and Catechism: Ascension
The Ascension app is built for reading and understanding Scripture. Free users get the full text of the Great Adventure Catholic Bible, the full Catechism, daily Mass readings with reflections, the full recorded Rosary with voices including Fr. Mike Schmitz, Fr. Mark-Mary Ames and the Sisters of Life, and most Ascension podcasts, according to its App Store listing. The paid plan, $59.99 a year or $8.99 a month, adds 80+ study plans and all programs.
Choose Ascension if you are doing The Bible in a Year or want to finally understand the Bible. Our Catholic Bible study for beginners guide pairs well with it.
Best One-Time Membership: Catholic/Christian Pro
Catholic/Christian Pro is our own membership, so weigh this pick with that in mind. Pro costs $49 once, with lifetime access and a 30-day money-back guarantee. It includes daily audio devotionals with calming background music, audio-guided prayer sessions for anxiety, healing and protection, in-depth Bible studies and prayer frameworks, curated worship playlists, offline access, a private circle to pray with, counselling sessions with a qualified therapist and the Freedom Programme for breaking a porn, gambling, drinking or drug habit.
It is a smaller library than Hallow's. Choose Pro if you want one guided daily routine, real Bible study and people to pray with, for one payment that never renews. It costs less than one year of Hallow or Ascension.
Best Free Daily Meditation: Pray As You Go
Pray As You Go, from the Jesuits in Britain, gives one guided prayer session each day of 10 to 13 minutes: music, a Scripture passage, and Ignatian questions to help you notice God in your day. It also offers Examen prayers, imaginative contemplation, sleep prayers and mental health prayer guides. Its listing says all content is always free, with no subscription.
Choose Pray As You Go if you want a calm, Scripture-centred start to the day and nothing to pay.
One app, one payment, a prayer life you keep
Most people install three prayer apps and use none. Pro gives you one daily routine to open: an audio devotional with calming music for the commute, audio-guided prayers when anxiety rises, in-depth Bible studies when you want to go deeper, worship playlists, and offline access. $49 once, against $59.99 to $69.99 a year for the big subscription apps. Why so cheap? It is all digital, made once and shared with every member, with no office or agency to pay for. We are rooting for you to pray every day.
Get Pro for $49 once One-time payment. No subscription. 30-day money-back guarantee.Best for the Liturgy of the Hours: Universalis or Divine Office
The Liturgy of the Hours is the official daily prayer of the Church, and two apps do it best.
Universalis gives the complete Hours and the Mass of every day, works fully offline, and follows local calendars for the USA, Canada, Ireland, Singapore and dioceses in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. It is $9.99 as a single purchase on the App Store. Spoken audio of every Hour is an optional subscription at $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year.
Divine Office is free and built around audio: every Hour read aloud with hymns, and a map showing others praying the same Hour. Its ministry runs on donations.
Choose Universalis to pray from text, offline, for one small payment. Choose Divine Office to pray along with recordings for free.
Best Daily Mass Companions: Magnificat and The Word Among Us
If you want the day's Mass readings with a meditation, the two classic monthly devotionals now have apps.
- Magnificat gives morning and evening prayer, the texts of daily Mass, a meditation and a saint each day. The digital edition is $24 a year, and paper plus digital is $52 a year, according to Magnificat USA.
- The Word Among Us gives a daily meditation on the Mass readings. The digital edition, with audio of the readings and meditations, is $1.99 a month with a free trial, according to wau.org.
For a full morning-to-night routine built on either, see our daily Catholic devotional guide.
