1. What Does Covenant Eyes Do, and What Does It Cost?
Covenant Eyes is accountability software that blocks pornography and shares a summary of your screen activity with a person you choose, whom it calls an ally. In 2026 the app is sold as Victory by Covenant Eyes. Its own pricing page, checked in November 2026, lists three plans: $18 a month, $198 a year, or a $950 one-time lifetime membership. Each plan starts with seven days free, carries a 30-day money-back guarantee, and covers unlimited devices for up to ten people in one family.
The features are solid. Victory blocks known porn sites, sends your ally blurred and encrypted screenshots, flags patterns, and adds counsellor-led resources and a prayer community. It is endorsed by the American Association of Christian Counselors, and our own guide to quitting pornography names it as a good tool.
Why people look for an alternative
- Price. $198 a year is real money, and the monthly plan works out to $216 a year. A single man who only needs his own phone and laptop covered may be paying for family features he will never use.
- Approach. Some people want a strong filter first and reports second. Others want screenshots instead of a list of sites.
- Devices. People on Linux, a Kindle or an older computer search for a tool that supports what they actually own.
- Privacy. Some readers want end-to-end encryption or the option to blur and redact what the partner sees.
Each of those is a fair reason. Switching tools is fine. Going without a tool because you are shopping for the perfect one is how another month slips by.

On price alone, the cheapest paid option for one device is Canopy's Essential plan at about $100 a year, and the cheapest accountability-first plan is Accountable2You Personal at $121 a year. Families with several children often find Covenant Eyes, Accountable2You Family or Truple better value, because one plan covers the whole household.
3. Filter or Accountability: Which Do You Need?
Most Catholics fighting pornography need both a filter and accountability, because each covers what the other misses. A filter stops the accidental click and slows the deliberate one. Accountability puts a person you respect on the other side of the screen, and that changes what you choose in a weak moment.
Filters are leaky. Social apps, search images and messaging all carry content no blocklist can keep up with, and a determined user can usually find a gap. Accountability works on the will. When you know your friend will see the report on Sunday, the 11pm decision looks different. Ever Accountable makes exactly this point on its own site: its software does not block by default, because it is built on being accountable to another person.
"I have made a covenant with my eyes; how then could I look upon a virgin?"
Job 31:1The Church calls this guarding of the eyes custody of the senses. The Catechism describes purity of heart as requiring "purity of vision, external and internal" and "discipline of feelings and imagination" (CCC 2520). Software is one modern form of that discipline. It is a fence. Grace, confession and a friend are what keep you on the right side of it.
A simple rule of thumb
- Mostly accidental exposure, or protecting children: start with a strong filter such as Canopy or a DNS filter, and add Screen Time limits.
- A habit you keep returning to: choose accountability first (Accountable2You, Ever Accountable, Truple or Covenant Eyes), and turn on filtering as well.
- A spouse who has been betrayed: accountability reports matter for rebuilding trust, and a same-sex partner should carry most of the daily load. Our guide for wives on a husband's porn addiction explains why.
4. Can You Block Porn for Free?
Yes, you can block most pornography for free with tools already on your phone and router, as long as someone else holds the passwords. Free tools have one weakness: no human sees what you do. Use them as a floor, and add a person.
- iPhone and iPad. In Screen Time, open Content & Privacy Restrictions, set web content to Limit Adult Websites, and block apps you know are triggers. Then ask your accountability partner to set the Screen Time passcode so you do not know it.
- Android. Under Settings, Network, Private DNS, enter the CleanBrowsing family filter hostname,
family-filter-dns.cleanbrowsing.org. CleanBrowsing's free Family Filter blocks adult sites, proxy and VPN domains, and forces SafeSearch on Google, Bing and YouTube. - Home Wi-Fi. Put the same filter in your router's DNS settings so every device in the house is covered, including the smart TV and games console.
- Search. Lock SafeSearch on in your Google account and on YouTube's Restricted Mode.
- Remove the escape hatches. Delete the second browser, the private-browsing app and any VPN you do not need for work.
CleanBrowsing says plainly that its free tier is throttled and comes without support. Apple's Screen Time is designed mainly for parents managing a child's device, though adults can apply the same limits to their own. Both are good free starts. Neither will text your friend at midnight.
5. How to Choose the Right Tool for You
The right tool is the one you will install tonight on every device you own and never uninstall. Answer five questions and the choice usually makes itself.
- What devices do you use? List every phone, tablet, laptop, work computer and console. If you use Linux or a Kindle Fire, Truple lists support for both on its site.
- Who is your accountability partner? If you do not have one yet, read how to find an accountability partner first. A report that nobody reads protects no one.
- Is it just you, or a family? One person with two devices pays less with Canopy Essential or Accountable2You Personal. A household with children usually does better on a family plan.
- Do you want screenshots or lists? Screenshots (Truple, Covenant Eyes) show what was on the screen. Activity lists and alerts (Accountable2You, Ever Accountable) are easier for a partner to review quickly.
- What will you actually pay for a full year? Choose the annual plan if you can. A monthly plan makes it easy to cancel on a bad day, which is exactly the day you need it.
6. Why Software Alone Will Not Set You Free
Software alone rarely sets anyone free, because the habit lives in the heart and the routine, and the screen is only where it shows up. Most people who install a blocker and change nothing else find a way around it within weeks. The urge was never about one website.
Pornography usually rides on a trigger: tiredness, loneliness, stress, boredom, the phone in bed after midnight. The Catechism names the way out as a whole life of growth: "self-knowledge, practice of an ascesis adapted to the situations that confront him, obedience to God's commandments, exercise of the moral virtues, and fidelity to prayer" (CCC 2340). A filter is part of the ascesis. The rest is a plan for your triggers, a daily habit of prayer, honest accountability and frequent confession, where Christ himself forgives and strengthens you.
St. Paul was blunt about the struggle: "I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do" (Romans 7:19). He was just as blunt about the answer: "Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!" (Romans 7:25). Install the software. Then build the life that makes the software matter.
The blocker closes the door. Freedom needs a plan for the heart
No app on this page can tell you why you reach for your phone at 11pm, or walk you to confession on Saturday. The Freedom Programme does. Take the free habit quiz, get an urge plan built around your own two biggest triggers, and receive a short check-in email every day for 30 days with one Scripture, one step and two buttons: "I was free today" or "I fell. Start again". Every seventh day brings a confession nudge. The first 30 days cost nothing. Pro carries you from day 31 to day 90 with weekly check-ins and an examen tracker. It does not block websites, so keep the tool you choose above. It gives the tool something to protect.
Start the Freedom Programme free First 30 days free. Days 31 to 90 with Pro: $49 once, 30-day money-back guarantee.7. Set It Up Tonight: A 20-Minute Plan
You can be protected before you sleep tonight. Here is the order that works.
- Minutes 1 to 5: choose one tool from the table above and start the free trial. Do not compare for another week.
- Minutes 5 to 12: install it on your phone first, then every other device, including the old tablet in the drawer.
- Minutes 12 to 15: turn on filtering, delete spare browsers and VPNs, and lock SafeSearch.
- Minutes 15 to 18: text the person you want as your partner: "I'm putting accountability software on my phone. Would you be willing to get the reports and check in with me once a week?"
- Minutes 18 to 20: charge the phone outside the bedroom, and pray: "Lord Jesus, I give you my eyes and my nights. Keep me close to you." Then look up the next confession time at your parish.
If you fall this week, tell your partner within a day, go to confession, and ask what the trigger was. A fall is information. Shame is what makes people hide it.
8. When to Get More Help
Get professional help when you have tried repeatedly to stop and cannot, when the habit is escalating, or when it sits alongside depression, anxiety or trauma. God heals through good counsellors as surely as through good confessors.
