Prayer for Healing: 20 Catholic Prayers for Body, Mind and Soul
For the diagnosis, the waiting room, the hospital bed and the person you love who is sick tonight
A prayer for healing asks Jesus Christ, who healed the sick in every one of the four Gospels, to restore a person in body, mind or soul according to His will. The Catholic Church has prayed for the sick since the apostles anointed them with oil (Mark 6:13), and she still does, in her own words, in the Anointing of the Sick and through the saints. This page gives 20 complete Catholic prayers for healing, organised by need: prayers to Christ the healer, prayers for healing and strength, the words of the Anointing, prayers to St Raphael, Our Lady of Lourdes, St Peregrine and St Pio, prayers for someone else, and prayers for when healing is slow.
Stop scrolling and pray one now. Sickness has a way of convincing us to wait until we feel stronger, calmer or more worthy before we come to God. Jesus never asked the sick for any of that. They came as they were, and so do you. No one knows the day or the hour (Mark 13:32). Ask today. For the full teaching on how God heals, why some are not healed and how the Church tests a miracle, read our guide on how to pray for healing as a Catholic.
Sick people are tired people. Let someone pray with you out loud. Pro gives you audio-guided prayer sessions for healing, anxiety and protection that you can press play on from a hospital bed, calming audio devotionals for the long nights, a circle of believers to carry your intention, and counselling with a qualified therapist. 1. Prayers to Christ the Healer
Every Catholic prayer for healing goes first to Jesus, because He is the one who heals. Count the healings in the Gospels and you find a Lord who touched lepers, raised a widow's son, gave sight to the blind and stopped for a woman everyone else ignored. He has not changed (Hebrews 13:8). The Church calls Him the physician of souls and bodies, and these four prayers go straight to Him. The first two are new prayers written for this page. The last two are prayers the Church has prayed for centuries.
1. Prayer to Jesus, the Divine Physician
Lord Jesus Christ, You went through every town and village healing every disease and every sickness. You touched the leper no one would touch, and You said, "I will; be clean." I come to You now with my body and my fear. You know this illness better than any doctor, and You love me more than anyone at my bedside. If it is Your will, heal me. Heal what the scans show and what they cannot show. Heal my body, calm my mind and wash my soul. Bless the hands of every nurse and doctor who treats me today, and give me the courage to take each step of treatment. I trust You with the outcome. Jesus, I trust in You. Amen.
"If you will, you can make me clean." And Jesus said, "I will; be clean." (Mark 1:40-41)
2. Heal Me, O Lord (A Prayer From Jeremiah)
Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved, for You are my praise. I have no strength of my own to bring You, only my weakness and my need. You formed me in the womb; You can mend what is broken in me. Let Your healing reach every cell and every nerve, every fear and every memory. And whatever You do with my body, save my soul. Amen.
A prayer built on Jeremiah 17:14. Original prayer for this collection.
3. Lord, I Am Not Worthy (The Centurion's Prayer)
Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
From the Order of Mass (Roman Missal), prayed by every Catholic before Holy Communion; drawn from the centurion's words in Matthew 8:8. Jesus healed his servant from a distance, at that very hour (Matthew 8:13). Pray it for someone too far away to visit.
4. Anima Christi (Soul of Christ)
Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. Blood of Christ, inebriate me. Water from the side of Christ, wash me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me. O good Jesus, hear me. Within Thy wounds hide me. Suffer me not to be separated from Thee. From the malicious enemy defend me. In the hour of my death call me, and bid me come unto Thee, that with Thy saints I may praise Thee for ever and ever. Amen.
Traditional Catholic prayer from the 14th century, author unknown. St Ignatius of Loyola loved it and recommended it in his Spiritual Exercises, which is why it is often wrongly credited to him.
The Anima Christi is the prayer for anyone who has just received Communion in hospital. Ask the chaplain or an extraordinary minister to bring you the Eucharist; Christ comes to the sick bed when the sick cannot come to Him.
2. Prayers for Healing and Strength in Illness
A prayer for healing and strength asks for two things at once: the cure, if God wills it, and the strength to get through today whether the cure has come or not. Both are right to ask for. Scripture tells the sick to do three things together: pray, repent and see the physician, because God created the physician too (Sirach 38:1-12). Pray these three prayers, then go to your appointment.
5. Prayer for Healing and Strength
Father, You give power to the faint, and to him who has no might You increase strength. I am faint today. My body aches, my sleep is broken and my patience is gone. I ask You plainly for healing. Until it comes, give me strength for this day only: for the medicine, the meals I do not want, the questions I cannot answer and the people who love me and do not know what to say. Let me lean on You and not on my mood. Renew my strength like the eagle's, so that I can walk this road without fainting. Amen.
"He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength." (Isaiah 40:29)
6. Prayer Before Surgery or Treatment
Lord, I am about to be put into the hands of others. Before I go under, I put myself into Yours. Guide the surgeon's eye and hand. Give the anaesthetist skill and the nurses gentleness. Keep every instrument clean and every decision wise. If anything goes wrong, let someone see it in time. I forgive anyone I need to forgive, and I ask Your forgiveness for my sins. Whatever happens on this table, I belong to You. Mary, Health of the Sick, stay beside me. My guardian angel, do not leave me. Amen.
"Honor the physician with the honor due him, according to your need of him, for the Lord created him." (Sirach 38:1)
7. Prayer While Waiting for Test Results
Jesus, the waiting is the worst part. My mind runs ahead to every bad outcome. Bring it back to this hour. Whatever the results say, You already know them, and You are already there. Give me peace tonight, honest doctors tomorrow and the grace to hear the news, good or hard, with You holding my hand. When I am afraid, I will trust in You. Amen.
"When I am afraid, I put my trust in you." (Psalm 56:3)

The Anointing of the Sick is the sacrament Christ gave His Church for the seriously ill, and it is the strongest prayer for healing a Catholic can receive. St James tells the sick to call the elders of the Church, who pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord, "and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up" (James 5:14-15). The Catechism teaches that this sacrament is for anyone who begins to be in danger because of sickness or old age, and it may be repeated if the illness worsens (CCC 1514-1515). It gives strength, peace and courage, forgives sins, unites the sick person to the Passion of Christ, and sometimes restores bodily health if that serves the person's salvation (CCC 1520-1523).
Here is the hard truth: too many Catholics wait for the deathbed and then the priest arrives too late. Do not wait. Ask for the Anointing before major surgery, after a serious diagnosis, when an elderly parent grows frail, and again if things get worse. Call your parish office today, or ask for the hospital chaplain. If death is near, read our page of Catholic prayers for the sick and dying, which explains Viaticum and the last rites.
8. The Words of the Anointing
Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. Amen. May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up. Amen.
The sacramental words of the Anointing of the Sick, said by the priest as he anoints the forehead and hands (English rite of Pastoral Care of the Sick). Only a priest can give this sacrament; learn the words so you can pray "Amen" with your whole heart.
9. Prayer to Prepare for the Anointing
Lord Jesus, the priest is coming with the holy oil, and I want to be ready. Forgive my sins; I am sorry for every one of them, the ones I remember and the ones I have forgotten. Open my heart to the grace of this sacrament. Heal me if it is Your will. Give me peace if it is not yet. Unite my suffering with Yours on the Cross, so that it is never wasted. I receive this anointing in faith, and I leave the rest to You. Amen.
"Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord." (James 5:14)
4. Prayers to the Saints for Healing
Catholics ask the saints to pray for the sick for the same reason you ask a friend to pray for you: "The prayer of a righteous man has great power in its effects" (James 5:16), and the saints are alive in Christ. The saints ask God with us, and every healing comes from Him. These four are the great patrons of the sick. Each prayer below is an original prayer written for this collection, so you can pray it with confidence that nothing has been misattributed.
10. Prayer to St Raphael the Archangel
St Raphael, your name means "God heals," and you were sent to heal Tobit's blindness and to free Sarah from her affliction. You stand before the glory of the Lord. Stand there now for me. Bring my sickness before His throne and ask Him to heal me in body and soul. Guide me to the right doctors and the right treatment, as you guided Tobias on his road. Drive away fear, and lead me home safely. Amen.
"I am Raphael, one of the seven holy angels who present the prayers of the saints and enter into the presence of the glory of the Holy One." (Tobit 12:15). Read more about St Raphael the Archangel.
11. Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes
Mary, Mother of God, you appeared to St Bernadette at the grotto of Lourdes and asked for prayer and penance, and countless sick pilgrims have come to that spring ever since. I cannot go to Lourdes, so I come to you here. You stood at the foot of the Cross; you know what suffering looks like up close. Take my illness to your Son, as you took the empty wine jars to Him at Cana. Ask Him for my healing, and ask Him for my conversion. Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us. Health of the Sick, pray for us. St Bernadette, pray for us. Amen.
Original prayer. The apparitions took place in 1858; the Church keeps the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes on 11 February, which St John Paul II made the World Day of the Sick. "Health of the Sick" is one of Mary's titles in the Litany of Loreto.
The Church is slow and careful about Lourdes. Thousands of cures have been reported there, and after years of review by doctors and bishops the Church has recognised fewer than a hundred as miracles. That caution is a gift: when the Church says "miracle," you can believe it. Our guide to praying for healing explains how the Lourdes Medical Bureau works.
12. Prayer to St Peregrine for Cancer
St Peregrine, you knew the fear of a body turning against itself. When the doctors planned to cut off your leg, you spent the night before the crucifix, and you rose in the morning healed. Pray for me now, and for everyone fighting cancer tonight: in the chemotherapy chair, in the radiation room, in the oncology waiting room, and lying awake at home. Ask Jesus to heal us if it is His will, to give our doctors wisdom, and to keep our hearts from bitterness. Whatever comes, keep us close to the Cross, where you found your strength. Amen.
Original prayer. St Peregrine Laziosi (c. 1260 to 1345) was a Servite friar of Forlì, Italy. By tradition he was healed of a cancerous wound on his leg on the night before a planned amputation. He was canonised in 1726 and is the patron of people with cancer.
13. Prayer to St Pio of Pietrelcina
St Pio, you carried the wounds of Christ in your own body for fifty years, and you spent your life in the confessional and at the altar for the sake of souls. You built a hospital for the relief of suffering because you could not bear to see the sick go uncared for. Look at me now. Pray that Jesus will heal me, and pray that I will make a good confession and not waste this suffering. Teach me your counsel: pray, hope, and do not worry. Amen.
Original prayer. St Pio of Pietrelcina (1887 to 1968), the Capuchin friar of San Giovanni Rotondo, founded the hospital Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza ("Home for the Relief of Suffering"), opened in 1956. He was canonised in 2002; his feast is 23 September.
Not sure which saint to ask? Our free patron saint finder matches you with a saint for your illness or situation in under a minute. St Agatha is invoked by women with breast cancer, St Lucy for eye disease and St Dymphna for mental illness.
5. Prayers for Someone Else's Healing
You can and should pray for someone else's healing, even if they do not pray, even if they do not believe, and even if they never find out. The paralysed man in Mark 2 was carried by four friends who tore open a roof, and "when Jesus saw their faith" He healed him (Mark 2:5). The Gospel names the faith of the friends. Be that friend. Pray these by name.
14. Prayer for a Sick Loved One
Lord Jesus, I bring You [name], whom I love and You love more. Like the friends who carried the paralysed man, I carry [him/her] to You now, because [he/she] cannot come alone. Look on [his/her] suffering with mercy. Heal [his/her] body, quiet [his/her] fear and draw [him/her] close to You. Give the doctors clear minds and the family patience with one another. Show me how to help with my hands as well as my prayers: a meal, a lift, a visit, a quiet hour. Amen.
"And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, 'My son, your sins are forgiven.'" (Mark 2:5)
15. Prayer for a Sick Child
Jesus, Jairus fell at Your feet and begged You to come to his little daughter, and You went with him. I am at Your feet now for my child. I would carry this sickness myself if I could. Hold my little one when I cannot. Take away the pain, guide every doctor and nurse on the ward, and if it is Your will, give [name] back to us whole. Give me strength to be calm in front of [him/her] and to fall apart only in front of You. Mary, mother of a suffering Son, pray for us. Amen.
"My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live." (Mark 5:23)
16. Prayer for Someone Far Away
Lord, You healed the centurion's servant without going to his house; You only spoke the word. I cannot be at [name]'s side tonight. Go where I cannot go. Speak the word that heals. Let [him/her] feel loved and not alone, and send someone to sit with [him/her] in my place. Amen.
"Go; let it be done for you as you have believed." And the servant was healed at that very moment. (Matthew 8:13)
Put your loved one's name on a parish prayer list, ask a priest to offer a Mass for their healing, and tell them you are praying, unless that would frighten them. If you cannot find the words for their situation, our free prayer generator will write a personal prayer for them in seconds.
Want people praying for your loved one with you? Pro includes a circle of believers to pray with, plus audio-guided healing prayer sessions you can play at the bedside. Get Pro. $49 once, no subscription, and a 30-day money-back guarantee if it is not right for you.
6. Prayers for Emotional and Inner Healing
God heals minds and hearts as well as bodies. "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds" (Psalm 147:3). Depression, anxiety, trauma and grief are real illnesses and real wounds, and none of them comes from a lack of faith. Pray for healing of the mind with the same boldness as for healing of the body, and get the same quality of care: talk to your doctor, and look for a good counsellor or a Catholic therapist (the directory at CatholicTherapists.com lists therapists faithful to Church teaching). Keep taking any medicine you have been prescribed. Grace and good care work together.
17. Prayer for Healing of the Mind
Lord Jesus, my mind is sick, and I am tired of pretending it is fine. The heaviness will not lift, the fear will not stop and the thoughts go round and round. You are near to the brokenhearted. Be near to me. Heal my mind as You healed the bodies of the sick. Lead me to the right help, and give me courage to accept it. On the days I cannot pray, let this be my prayer: Jesus, I trust in You. Amen.
"The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." (Psalm 34:18)

18. Prayer for Healing of Old Wounds
Father, some of my wounds are older than my illness. Words spoken over me as a child, betrayals, losses, things done to me and things I did. They still ache when the weather turns. Walk back through my life with me, Lord, room by room. Where I was hurt, heal me. Where I hurt others, forgive me and lead me to confession. Where I hold resentment, give me the grace to forgive, even if it takes years. Bind up what is broken. Amen.
"He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." (Psalm 147:3)
Confession is the sacrament of healing for the soul, and it often loosens what nothing else could. If you have been away, our step-by-step guide to going to confession will get you through the door this week. For anxiety specifically, read Catholic help for anxiety.

When healing does not come, it is never because your faith was too small. Say that to yourself out loud, because someone may have told you otherwise. St Paul begged three times for his thorn to be removed, and God answered, "My grace is sufficient for you" (2 Corinthians 12:9). Paul told Timothy to take some wine for his frequent stomach ailments (1 Timothy 5:23) and left his co-worker Trophimus ill at Miletus (2 Timothy 4:20). The apostles who healed the sick also stayed sick themselves sometimes. Keep asking, keep taking your treatment, and pray these two prayers on the days the answer seems to be "not yet."
19. Divine Mercy Prayer for the Sick
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world. Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world. Jesus, I trust in You.
From the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, given to St Faustina Kowalska in the 1930s, and the words beneath the Divine Mercy image. Pray the whole Chaplet on rosary beads at 3 p.m., the hour of Christ's death; our page on how to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet walks you through it. Read more about St Faustina.
20. Prayer of Surrender in Long Illness
Lord, I asked You to take this away, and I am still asking. I will keep asking, because You told me to. But tonight I also give it to You. If You heal me, I will praise You. If You do not heal me yet, I will trust You. Let Your grace be enough for today. Let my weakness be the place where Your power shows. Unite my pain to Your Cross for the people I love and for souls who have no one to pray for them. Your will be done, on earth and in this body. Amen.
"My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." (2 Corinthians 12:9)
The Church calls this redemptive suffering: pain offered to God in union with Christ, which is never wasted. Our guide to why God allows suffering explains it without platitudes. If illness is wearing you down, our collection of prayers for strength in hard times is for exactly this season.
8. How to Pray for Healing, Step by Step
The way to pray for healing is to ask God plainly, every day, inside the life of the Church, while you keep using the medicine He has given. Here is a plan you can start in the next ten minutes.
- Ask out loud, by name. Say what is wrong and what you want. "Lord, heal my kidneys." "Lord, heal my mother's cancer." Jesus asked the blind man, "What do you want me to do for you?" (Mark 10:51). Answer Him.
- Pick one prayer from this page and pray it daily. Morning or evening, same time, same prayer. A fixed prayer carries you on the days words fail.
- Go to confession. Sin is a sickness of the soul, and Jesus often forgave before He healed (Mark 2:5). Clear the deck this week.
- Call the priest for the Anointing. If the illness is serious, do it this week. Ring the parish office or ask for the hospital chaplain today.
- Receive the Eucharist. Go to Mass if you can. If you cannot, ask for Communion to be brought to you.
- Ask others to pray. Your parish prayer list, your family, a prayer group. James 5:16 tells us to pray for one another so that we may be healed.
- Ask a saint to pray with you. St Raphael, Our Lady of Lourdes, St Peregrine or St Pio. Pray a novena: nine days of the same prayer.
- Keep every appointment and every medicine. Never stop a treatment because you have prayed. God works through doctors (Sirach 38:12-14).
- Offer what you suffer. Give the pain to Christ for someone you love. That turns the waiting room into a chapel.

9. How Other Christians Pray for Healing
All Christians pray for the sick, and they do it in different ways. Pentecostal and charismatic Protestants pray with the laying on of hands and expect God to heal now; many hold that healing is promised in the atonement, reading "with his stripes we are healed" (Isaiah 53:5) as a guarantee of physical healing in this life. The Eastern Orthodox Churches celebrate the sacrament of Holy Unction, and many parishes anoint all the faithful on Holy Wednesday. Anglicans and Lutherans keep rites of anointing and prayer for the sick, and evangelical churches pray over the sick in elders' meetings, following James 5.
The Catholic view: God still heals, sometimes dramatically, and the charismatic gift of healing is real (1 Corinthians 12:9). Catholic charismatics also lay hands on the sick in prayer. But the Church refuses the claim that every believer will be healed if only their faith is strong enough. That teaching has crushed many sick Christians under guilt they never deserved. Jesus heals, and He also asks some of His friends to share His Cross. Our guide to praying for healing weighs the Pentecostal position fairly, and our guide to the gifts of the Holy Spirit explains the charism of healing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most powerful Catholic prayer for healing?
The most powerful Catholic prayer for healing is the Church's own sacrament, the Anointing of the Sick, given by a priest to anyone seriously ill (James 5:14-15). After that come the Mass and Holy Communion, and any heartfelt prayer to Jesus, such as "Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed."
What is a short prayer for healing?
A short prayer for healing from Scripture is Jeremiah 17:14: "Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved." Another is the leper's prayer in Mark 1:40, "Lord, if you will, you can make me clean," or simply "Jesus, I trust in You."
Who is the patron saint of healing?
St Raphael the Archangel, whose name means "God heals," is the patron of healing and of the sick, because he healed Tobit's blindness in the Book of Tobit. Catholics also ask Our Lady of Lourdes, St Pio of Pietrelcina and Sts Cosmas and Damian, the doctor martyrs, to pray for the sick.
Who is the patron saint of cancer patients?
St Peregrine Laziosi, a Servite friar who died in 1345, is the patron saint of people with cancer. By tradition he was healed of a cancerous wound on his leg the night before it was to be amputated. Women with breast cancer also ask St Agatha to pray for them.
Can I pray for someone else's healing?
Yes. Scripture tells us to pray for one another so that we may be healed (James 5:16), and Jesus healed the paralysed man when He saw the faith of the friends who carried him (Mark 2:5). Pray by name, ask your parish to pray, and ask a priest to offer a Mass for the sick person.
Who can receive the Anointing of the Sick?
Any baptised Catholic who has reached the age of reason and is in danger because of serious illness or old age can receive the Anointing of the Sick, including before major surgery. It can be repeated if the illness worsens (CCC 1514-1515). Call your parish or the hospital chaplain to ask for it.
If I am not healed, does it mean my faith is weak?
No. A lack of healing is never proof of weak faith. St Paul prayed three times for his thorn in the flesh to be removed and was told "My grace is sufficient for you" (2 Corinthians 12:9). Keep praying, keep your treatment, and trust that God is at work in ways you cannot see yet.
