1. What Does the Bible Say About Marriage?
The Bible says marriage is God's idea. He made man and woman in his image, joined them as "one flesh" (Genesis 2:24), and Jesus sealed it: "What therefore God has joined together, don't let man tear apart" (Matthew 19:6). St. Paul says of marriage, "This mystery is great", and applies it to Christ and the Church (Ephesians 5:32). The Catechism notes that Scripture begins with a marriage and ends with "the wedding-feast of the Lamb" (CCC 1602).
Our culture treats marriage as a contract you can exit when the feelings fade. Scripture calls it a covenant, sworn before God, that makes two people one. That is a harder vision and a far better one. Each verse below comes with its context, its meaning in Catholic teaching and a way for couples to pray it together.
Pray together, starting tonight. Couples who pray together have a habit to fall back on when the hard seasons come. Pro gives you audio devotionals for the drive home, prayer frameworks and in-depth Bible studies, a circle of believers to pray with, and counselling sessions with a qualified therapist. 2. Bible Verses About God's Design for Marriage
The Bible roots marriage in creation, before any law or culture. Jesus answered every argument about marriage by going back "to the beginning".
Male and female he created them (Genesis 1:27-28)
"God created man in his own image. In God's image he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them. God said to them, 'Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth.'"Genesis 1:27-28 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: Man and woman together image God, and their first blessing is fruitfulness. The Church teaches that marriage is ordered to the good of the spouses and to children (CCC 1601).
Pray it: Thank God together for the image of him you see in each other.
It is not good for the man to be alone (Genesis 2:18)
"The LORD God said, 'It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper comparable to him.'"Genesis 2:18 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: The first "not good" in the Bible is loneliness. "Helper" (ezer) is a word Scripture also uses for God himself (Psalm 33:20). It means rescuer and partner. There is nothing lesser in it.
Pray it: Ask each other, "How can I help you this week?"
They will be one flesh (Genesis 2:23-24)
"This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. ... Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh."Genesis 2:23-24 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: The first words of a human in Scripture are a love poem. "Leave" means your spouse now comes before your parents. "One flesh" means a union of whole lives, sealed in the body.
Pray it: Name one way you still need to "leave" well. Pray about it together.
What God has joined together (Matthew 19:4-6)
"Haven't you read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, 'For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall be joined to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh?' So that they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, don't let man tear apart."Matthew 19:4-6 (WEBBE; compare Mark 10:6-9)
Context and meaning: Pharisees asked about divorce for "any reason". Jesus skipped the legal debate and went back to creation. God does the joining, so marriage belongs to him first.
Pray it: Hold hands and pray, "Lord, you joined us. Keep us joined."
3. What Does Ephesians 5 Say About Husbands and Wives?
Ephesians 5 calls husbands and wives to mutual self-giving modelled on Christ and the Church. It is the most argued-over marriage passage in the Bible, usually because people start reading at verse 22. Start at verse 21. For deeper treatment of the roles, see our guides on biblical manhood and the trad wife debate.
Subject to one another (Ephesians 5:21)
"subjecting yourselves to one another in the fear of Christ."Ephesians 5:21 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: This verse governs everything that follows. St. John Paul II taught that the subjection in marriage is mutual, out of reverence for Christ (Mulieris Dignitatem 24).
Pray it: Ask, "Where am I insisting on my way?" Yield one thing today.
Wives, be subject to your husbands (Ephesians 5:22-24)
"Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the assembly, being himself the saviour of the body."Ephesians 5:22-23 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: The head Paul describes is a saviour who dies for his body. A wife's trust answers a husband's sacrifice. This passage never licenses control, contempt or abuse, and anyone using it that way has torn it out of Scripture.
Pray it: Wives, pray for your husband's courage to lead by serving.
Love your wives as Christ loved the Church (Ephesians 5:25-28)
"Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly and gave himself up for her. ... Even so husbands also ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself."Ephesians 5:25, 28 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: Paul gives wives three verses and husbands nine. The husband's standard is the Cross. Husbands, this is the harder command. Obey it first.
Pray it: Husbands, ask God to show you one sacrifice your wife needs from you.
This mystery is great (Ephesians 5:31-33)
"'For this cause a man will leave his father and mother and will be joined to his wife. Then the two will become one flesh.' This mystery is great, but I speak concerning Christ and the assembly. Nevertheless each of you must also love his own wife even as himself; and let the wife see that she respects her husband."Ephesians 5:31-33 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: Paul quotes Genesis 2:24 and says it points to Christ and the Church. The Latin Vulgate renders "mystery" as sacramentum. Your marriage is meant to show the world how Christ loves.
Pray it: "Lord, let people see your love in our marriage."
Do not be bitter against them (Colossians 3:18-19)
"Wives, be in subjection to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and don't be bitter against them."Colossians 3:18-19 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: "As is fitting in the Lord" sets the limit: nothing that contradicts Christ. Husbands get a pointed warning against resentment, the slow poison of many marriages.
Pray it: Name one resentment. Confess it, to God and then to your spouse.
Joint heirs of the grace of life (1 Peter 3:7)
"You husbands, in the same way, live with your wives according to knowledge, giving honour to the woman as to the weaker vessel, as also being joint heirs of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered."1 Peter 3:7 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: "Weaker vessel" referred to physical strength, in an age when women had little legal protection. Peter's point is honour and equality before God: "joint heirs". A husband who dishonours his wife will find his prayers hindered.
Pray it: Husbands, honour your wife in front of someone today.

The Bible celebrates romance and desire inside marriage with frankness that surprises many Christians. A whole book, the Song of Songs, is a love poem. For 1 Corinthians 13 and more verses about love, see our page of Bible verses about love.
My beloved is mine (Song of Songs 2:16)
"My beloved is mine, and I am his. He browses amongst the lilies."Song of Songs 2:16 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: Belonging goes both ways. Mutual possession is the language of the vow. The Church reads the Song both as married love and as God's love for the soul.
Pray it: Say it to each other, then thank God for each other.
Love is strong as death (Song of Songs 8:6-7)
"Set me as a seal on your heart, as a seal on your arm; for love is strong as death. ... Many waters can't quench love, neither can floods drown it."Song of Songs 8:6-7 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: A seal marked ownership and identity. Married love is meant to be that permanent. This passage is among the readings offered for Catholic weddings.
Pray it: On your anniversary, read it aloud and renew your vows in your own words.
Rejoice in the wife of your youth (Proverbs 5:18-19)
"Let your spring be blessed. Rejoice in the wife of your youth. ... Be captivated always with her love."Proverbs 5:18-19 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: A father warns his son against adultery by pointing him to delight at home. Desire is meant to be enjoyed in marriage and guarded there. "Always" means after the children, the grey hair and the illness too.
Pray it: Husbands, pray for your eyes and heart to stay home.
Whoever finds a wife finds a good thing (Proverbs 18:22)
"Whoever finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favour of the LORD."Proverbs 18:22 (WEBBE; compare Proverbs 19:14)
Context and meaning: A spouse is a sign of God's favour. Gratitude is the antidote to taking each other for granted.
Pray it: Tell your spouse three things you are grateful for in them.
A threefold cord (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12)
"Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls. ... a threefold cord is not quickly broken."Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, 12 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: The original is about companionship in general. Christians read the third strand as God, binding husband and wife. Two people alone fray. With Christ at the centre, the cord holds.
Pray it: Braid three strands of cord and hang it where you pray. Pray it together weekly.
5. Bible Verses About Faithfulness and Sex in Marriage
The Bible guards the marriage bed fiercely because it is holy. Fidelity covers the body, the eyes and the heart. If trust has been broken, our guide on adultery and emotional affairs shows the road back, and our guide on contraception explains the Church's teaching on openness to life.
Let the bed be undefiled (Hebrews 13:4)
"Let marriage be held in honour amongst all, and let the bed be undefiled; but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers."Hebrews 13:4 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: "Amongst all": marriage deserves honour from the married and the single alike. Sex within marriage is good and holy. God takes its betrayal seriously.
Pray it: Pray for every marriage you know by name.
Do not deprive one another (1 Corinthians 7:3-5)
"Let the husband give his wife the affection owed her, and likewise also the wife her husband. The wife doesn't have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise also the husband doesn't have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Don't deprive one another, unless it is by consent for a season, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer."1 Corinthians 7:3-5 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: Greco-Roman custom held wives to fidelity and let husbands stray. Paul made the duties equal and mutual. Abstinence is "by consent", together, for prayer. Mutual gift excludes coercion of any kind.
Pray it: Pray for generosity and tenderness toward each other's needs.
You shall not commit adultery (Exodus 20:14)
"You shall not commit adultery."Exodus 20:14 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: The Sixth Commandment in Catholic numbering. God put marriage under the protection of the Ten Commandments.
Pray it: Examine your conscience on it honestly before your next confession.
Adultery in the heart (Matthew 5:27-28)
"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery;' but I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart."Matthew 5:27-28 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: Jesus moves fidelity inward. Pornography, fantasy and secret flirting are breaches of the vow. If pornography is in your marriage, start with our guide on overcoming pornography.
Pray it: "Lord, guard my eyes, and give me a heart for my spouse alone."
The wife of your covenant (Malachi 2:14-15)
"The LORD has been witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have dealt treacherously, though she is your companion and the wife of your covenant. ... let no one deal treacherously against the wife of his youth."Malachi 2:14-15 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: Men in Malachi's day abandoned the wives of their youth, and God refused their worship because of it (2:13). God is the witness of every vow.
Pray it: "You witnessed our vows. Help us keep them."
6. Bible Verses for Weddings
The best Bible verses for a wedding come straight from the readings the Church offers for Catholic weddings. Couples choose with their priest from the approved options. These five are among the most loved.
That we may grow old together (Tobit 8:5-8)
"Blessed are you, O God of our fathers. ... You made Adam, and gave him Eve his wife for a helper and support. ... And now, O Lord, I take not this my sister for lust, but in truth. Command that I may find mercy and grow old with her." She said with him, "Amen."Tobit 8:5-8 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: On their wedding night, Tobias and Sarah, brought together with the help of the archangel Raphael, pray before anything else. Tobit is in Catholic and Orthodox Bibles.
Pray it: Pray it together on your wedding night or anniversary, ending with "Amen" together.
Do whatever he tells you (John 2:1-11)
"There was a wedding in Cana of Galilee. Jesus' mother was there. ... His mother said to the servants, 'Whatever he says to you, do it.' ... 'You have kept the good wine until now!'"John 2:1, 5, 10 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: Jesus' first sign was at a wedding. The Church sees in it the goodness of marriage and its new role as a sign of Christ's presence (CCC 1613). Mary noticed the need first.
Pray it: When something runs out in your marriage, tell Mary, "They have no wine."
The wedding supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:7-9)
"For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his wife has made herself ready. ... Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb."Revelation 19:7, 9 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: Every Christian marriage points to this final wedding of Christ and his people. At every Mass the priest echoes this verse before Communion.
Pray it: "Help us get each other to heaven."
Her value is far above rubies (Proverbs 31:10-12)
"Who can find a worthy woman? For her value is far above rubies. The heart of her husband trusts in her. ... She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life."Proverbs 31:10-12 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: The "worthy woman" is strong, capable, trusted and praised. See our full guide to the Proverbs 31 woman.
Pray it: Husbands, praise your wife aloud as her husband does in 31:28.
A good wife is a great gift (Sirach 26:1-3)
"Happy is the husband of a good wife. The number of his days will be doubled. A faithful wife gives joy to her husband. ... A good wife is a great gift."Sirach 26:1-3 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: Ben Sira treats a faithful spouse as one of life's highest blessings, and the Church offers this passage as a wedding reading.
Pray it: Thank God for the gift of your spouse by name.

In hard seasons, the Bible calls spouses to forgiveness, humility and patience, daily. Most marriages die of small unforgiven things, piled up over years.
Bearing with one another (Colossians 3:12-14)
"Put on therefore, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do. Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection."Colossians 3:12-14 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: "Put on" is clothing language: you choose these virtues each morning. "Bearing with" assumes your spouse will annoy you. Forgiveness is measured by Christ's.
Pray it: Each morning, "put on" one virtue by name for the day.
Do not let the sun go down on your wrath (Ephesians 4:26)
"Be angry, and don't sin. Don't let the sun go down on your wrath."Ephesians 4:26 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: Anger itself is allowed. Letting it settle overnight is how it hardens into resentment. Settle it, or at least agree to settle it, before you sleep.
Pray it: Before bed, pray together, "Forgive us as we forgive each other."
Kind, tender-hearted, forgiving (Ephesians 4:31-32)
"Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you."Ephesians 4:31-32 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: "Outcry" is shouting; "slander" includes running your spouse down to friends. Replace each with kindness.
Pray it: For one week, speak only well of your spouse to others.
Count others better than yourself (Philippians 2:3)
"doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself."Philippians 2:3 (WEBBE; 2:4 adds looking to the interests of others)
Context and meaning: Many marriages become a scoreboard. Paul tells you to stop keeping score, then points to Christ, who emptied himself (2:5-8).
Pray it: Do one thing today purely for your spouse's interests.
Bear one another's burdens (Galatians 6:2)
"Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ."Galatians 6:2 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: Illness, job loss, grief and depression land on one spouse and weigh on both. Carrying them together fulfils Christ's law.
Pray it: Ask, "What are you carrying that I do not know about?"

8. Bible Verses About Family and Children
The Bible calls children a gift and the home the first school of faith. The Church calls the family the "domestic church" (CCC 1656). If you are longing for children, see our guide to infertility and real hope.
Unless the LORD builds the house (Psalm 127:1)
"Unless the LORD builds the house, they who build it labour in vain."Psalm 127:1 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: A pilgrim song. Careers, mortgages and plans are vanity without God at the foundation.
Pray it: Bless your home together, room by room.
Children are a heritage (Psalm 127:3)
"Behold, children are a heritage of the LORD. The fruit of the womb is his reward."Psalm 127:3 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: Children are gifts received. The Church calls them "the supreme gift of marriage" (CCC 1652).
Pray it: Pray a blessing over each child by name tonight.
Olive shoots around your table (Psalm 128:3)
"Your wife will be as a fruitful vine in the innermost parts of your house, your children like olive shoots around your table."Psalm 128:3 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: Psalm 128 is often sung at Catholic weddings. The family table is a sacred place. Protect family meals.
Pray it: Say grace together at every meal this week.
As for me and my house (Joshua 24:15)
"Choose today whom you will serve. ... but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."Joshua 24:15 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: Joshua forced a decision: "choose today". Every household serves something. Decide together who yours will serve.
Pray it: Write it above your door and pray it together.
Teach them diligently (Deuteronomy 6:6-7)
"These words, which I command you today, shall be on your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up."Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (WEBBE)
Context and meaning: Faith is passed on in ordinary moments. Parents are the first educators of their children (CCC 2223). No parish programme can replace you.
Pray it: Pray with your children at bedtime, every night.
9. How Do Catholics, Protestants and the Orthodox Read These Verses?
All Christians read these verses as God's design for marriage. They differ on whether marriage is a sacrament and whether it can be dissolved.
- Catholics hold that marriage between baptised Christians is a sacrament (CCC 1601), drawing on Ephesians 5:32 and Cana (CCC 1613). A valid, consummated sacramental marriage cannot be dissolved (CCC 1640). Jesus' exception "except for sexual immorality" (Matthew 19:9) is commonly read by Catholic interpreters as referring to unlawful unions that were never true marriages.
- Most Protestants honour marriage as a holy covenant and do not count it a sacrament. Many permit divorce and remarriage after adultery or abandonment, citing Matthew 19:9 and 1 Corinthians 7:15.
- The Orthodox treat marriage as a sacrament and, by pastoral oikonomia, may allow a second or third marriage with a penitential rite.
Divorce, annulment and remarriage are covered in depth in our guides to Catholic marriage and Catholic divorce.
10. How Can Couples Pray These Verses? Lectio Divina Together
Couples can pray these verses through lectio divina, the Church's slow, prayerful reading in which Scripture "becomes prayer" (CCC 1177). Fifteen minutes, three nights a week, is enough to start.
- Read. One spouse reads a verse aloud slowly. The other reads it again.
- Meditate. Sit in silence for a minute. Each person notices one word that stands out.
- Share. Say your word and why. Listen without fixing or arguing.
- Pray. Each prays aloud for the other, one sentence is enough.
- Act. Agree on one small act for tomorrow from the verse.
If praying aloud together feels awkward, that is normal. Start with an Our Father and a Hail Mary holding hands, and add the verse later. Pro's prayer frameworks and audio devotionals give you a ready structure, $49 once with a 30-day money-back guarantee. For a personalised prayer, try our free prayer generator.

12. Why Pray for Your Marriage Today?
Pray for your marriage today because every marriage is under attack and drift is the default. "Of that day or that hour no one knows" (Mark 13:32). You do not know how many evenings you have left together. Spend tonight's well. Say the kind word. Make the apology. Pray one verse together before you sleep.
A prayer for our marriage
Lord God, you joined us together. Keep us joined. Make us patient and kind with each other, quick to forgive and slow to anger. Help us to love as Christ loves the Church and to honour each other every day. Bless our home and our children. Bring us both safely to the wedding supper of the Lamb. Holy Family of Nazareth, pray for us. Amen.
