Bible Verses About Healing: 33 Verses With Catholic Commentary

Body, heart and soul, with context, a way to pray each verse, and honest words for when healing does not come

The Bible says God is "the LORD who heals you" (Exodus 15:26), that Jesus healed the sick wherever he went, and that the Church still prays over the sick and anoints them (James 5:14-15). Scripture also honours doctors and medicine as God's gifts (Sirach 38:1-4) and promises full healing in the resurrection. Below are 33 Bible verses about healing, grouped by need, each with its context, its meaning in Catholic teaching and a way to pray it.

1. What Does the Bible Say About Healing?

The Bible says God heals, that Jesus healed the sick as a sign of his Kingdom, and that the Church continues his care through prayer, the Anointing of the Sick and medicine. Scripture is also honest: God does not heal every illness in this life, and full healing comes in the resurrection, when "death will be no more" (Revelation 21:4).

Hold both truths at once. Ask boldly, because Jesus said "I want to" to a leper who asked (Mark 1:41). Trust completely, because St. Paul's prayer for his own healing was answered with grace instead (2 Corinthians 12:9). Each verse below comes with its context, its meaning in Catholic teaching and one way to pray it.

Keep seeing your doctor. Never stop a medicine or treatment because you are praying. Scripture says "the Lord created medicines out of the earth" (Sirach 38:4). Prayer and medical care work together. And if you are not healed, that is never proof of weak faith.

Quotations come from the World English Bible, British Edition (WEBBE), a public-domain translation that includes deuterocanonical books such as Sirach and renders the divine name as LORD. Punctuation is lightly adjusted for our house style. Psalms use the Hebrew numbering of most modern Bibles.

2. Bible Verses About God Who Heals

The Bible reveals God as a healer from the Exodus onward. These six verses give you words to bring illness straight to him.

I am the LORD who heals you (Exodus 15:26)

"I will put none of the diseases on you which I have put on the Egyptians; for I am the LORD who heals you."Exodus 15:26 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: Just after the bitter water at Marah was made sweet. God names himself healer. The promise was tied to Israel's covenant obedience; the name itself is for all time.

Pray it: Call on him by this name: "LORD who heals, look at me."

Who heals all your diseases (Psalm 103:2-5)

"Praise the LORD, my soul, and don't forget all his benefits, who forgives all your sins, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with loving kindness and tender mercies."Psalm 103:2-4 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: Forgiveness comes first in the list, then healing. The psalm praises God for every recovery, by miracle or by medicine, and looks ahead to the day he heals completely.

Pray it: List every past recovery you can remember. Thank him for each.

He binds up their wounds (Psalm 147:3)

"He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds."Psalm 147:3 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: The next verse says he counts the stars. The God of galaxies stoops to dress a wound. Binding is slow work. Healing often takes time.

Pray it: Picture God gently bandaging the place that hurts.

Heal me, O LORD (Jeremiah 17:14)

"Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed. Save me, and I will be saved; for you are my praise."Jeremiah 17:14 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: Jeremiah, mocked and persecuted, prays the simplest healing prayer in Scripture. He asks God directly and trusts that whatever God does will be real.

Pray it: Pray it every time you take your medicine.

I cried to you, and you have healed me (Psalm 30:2)

"LORD my God, I cried to you, and you have healed me."Psalm 30:2 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: A song of thanks after rescue. Scripture expects you to cry out loudly and thank him afterwards. Many people ask; fewer come back to give thanks (Luke 17:17-18).

Pray it: When good news comes, pray this verse before you tell anyone else.

He will sustain him on his sickbed (Psalm 41:3)

"The LORD will sustain him on his sickbed, and restore him from his bed of illness."Psalm 41:3 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: Verse 1 says this is for the one who cares for the poor. God sustains in the bed before he raises from it. Strength to endure is itself an answer.

Pray it: "Sustain me here, in this bed, today."

3. Bible Verses About Jesus Healing the Sick

The Gospels show Jesus healing constantly, out of compassion and as a sign that God's Kingdom had arrived. The Catechism says his healings announced a more radical healing: victory over sin and death (CCC 1505).

Healing every disease (Matthew 4:23)

"Jesus went about in all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the Good News of the Kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness amongst the people."Matthew 4:23 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: Teaching, preaching and healing come together. Jesus cared for bodies and souls at the same time. The Church still runs hospitals for this reason.

Pray it: "Jesus, walk through my town, my ward, my home today."

I want to. Be made clean (Mark 1:40-41)

"If you want to, you can make me clean." Being moved with compassion, he stretched out his hand, and touched him, and said to him, "I want to. Be made clean."Mark 1:40-41 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: Lepers were untouchable. Jesus touched him before healing him. Compassion drives Christ's healing, and he is willing to touch what others avoid.

Pray it: Pray the leper's words exactly. They are perfect.

Just say the word (Matthew 8:8)

"Lord, I'm not worthy for you to come under my roof. Just say the word, and my servant will be healed."Matthew 8:8 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: A Roman officer asks for his servant. Catholics pray his words at every Mass before Communion: "Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed."

Pray it: At your next Communion, mean every word, for body and soul.

Your faith has made you well (Mark 5:34)

"Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be cured of your disease."Mark 5:34 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: The woman bled for twelve years and "had spent all that she had" on doctors (5:26). Jesus calls her "daughter" and restores her to community. This verse praises her faith. It nowhere says the unhealed lack faith.

Pray it: Reach out in prayer as she did. Touch the hem: go to Mass.

What do you want me to do for you? (Mark 10:51-52)

Jesus asked him, "What do you want me to do for you?" The blind man said to him, "Rabboni, that I may see again." Jesus said to him, "Go your way. Your faith has made you well."Mark 10:51-52 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: Jesus knew what Bartimaeus needed and asked anyway. God wants you to name it. Bartimaeus then "followed Jesus on the way". Healing leads to discipleship.

Pray it: Answer Jesus' question out loud, specifically.

Who sinned? (John 9:2-3)

"Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" Jesus answered, "This man didn't sin, nor did his parents, but that the works of God might be revealed in him."John 9:2-3 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: Jesus flatly rejects the idea that this illness was punishment for sin. Do not let anyone tell you that your sickness, or your child's, is God's penalty.

Pray it: "Lord, let your works be revealed in me, however you choose."

4. Bible Verses About Doctors and Medicine

The Bible honours doctors and medicine as gifts from God. Anyone who tells you that seeing a doctor shows a lack of faith is contradicting Scripture. Sirach 38, read in Catholic and Orthodox Bibles, is the clearest passage.

The Lord created the physician (Sirach 38:1-4)

"Honour a physician according to your need with the honours due to him, for truly the Lord has created him. For healing comes from the Most High. ... The Lord created medicines out of the earth. A prudent man will not despise them."Sirach 38:1-2, 4 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: Ben Sira, a Jewish sage writing around 180 BC, calls it prudent to use medicine. The Catechism teaches that we must take reasonable care of our health (CCC 2288).

Pray it: Pray for your doctors and nurses by name.

Pray, then give place to the physician (Sirach 38:9, 12)

"My son, in your sickness don't be negligent, but pray to the Lord, and he will heal you. ... Then give place to the physician, for truly the Lord has created him. Don't let him leave you, for you need him."Sirach 38:9, 12 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: The order is pray, repent (38:10), offer worship (38:11), then see the doctor. Verse 14 adds that physicians also pray for skill in diagnosis. Grace and medicine form one path.

Pray it: Before every appointment: "Lord, guide this doctor's mind and hands."

A little wine for your stomach (1 Timothy 5:23)

"Be no longer a drinker of water only, but use a little wine for your stomach's sake and your frequent infirmities."1 Timothy 5:23 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: Paul, who had seen miracles, gave his sick friend Timothy a practical remedy. Timothy had "frequent infirmities". A faithful bishop lived with chronic illness, and Paul used ordinary means.

Pray it: Thank God for the ordinary remedies that work.

5. Bible Verses About Healing in the Church

The Bible shows Christ handing his healing mission to the apostles, and the Church continues it in the Anointing of the Sick, in prayer and in caring for the sick. Our guide on how to pray for healing covers the sacrament, the charism of healing and Lourdes in depth.

Is any among you sick? (James 5:14-15)

"Is any amongst you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven."James 5:14-15 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: "Elders" translates presbyteroi, from which "priest" comes. This is the Church's rite for the sick (CCC 1510). It is for anyone seriously ill or frail with age, as well as the dying, and it is fitting before major surgery (CCC 1514-1515).

Pray it: Call your parish today and ask for the Anointing of the Sick.

They anointed many with oil (Mark 6:13)

"They cast out many demons, and anointed many with oil who were sick and healed them."Mark 6:13 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: The Twelve on their first mission. The Council of Trent saw the sacrament hinted at here and promulgated in James 5.

Pray it: Pray for priests who visit hospitals at night.

I was sick and you visited me (Matthew 25:36)

"I was naked and you clothed me. I was sick and you visited me. I was in prison and you came to me."Matthew 25:36 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: Visiting the sick is a work of mercy on which we will be judged. Caregivers, this verse is yours. Every hospital visit is a visit to Christ.

Pray it: Visit, call or message one sick person this week.

6. Bible Verses About Emotional Healing and a Broken Heart

The Bible speaks often to wounded hearts: grief, trauma, rejection and shame. These verses are for that kind of pain. Emotional wounds also deserve good care, so pray with these verses and talk to your doctor or a qualified therapist too.

Near to the broken-hearted (Psalm 34:18)

"The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit."Psalm 34:18 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: A broken heart draws God near. You never need to feel better before you pray.

Pray it: "I am crushed. You are near. Stay."

To bind up the broken-hearted (Isaiah 61:1)

"The Lord GOD's Spirit is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the humble. He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to those who are bound."Isaiah 61:1 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: Jesus read this in the synagogue at Nazareth and said, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled" (Luke 4:21). Healing hearts is his stated mission.

Pray it: Name what still binds you. Ask him to release it.

He restores my soul (Psalm 23:3)

"He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake."Psalm 23:3 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: Restoration comes after green pastures and still waters (23:2). The Shepherd makes you rest first.

Pray it: Take a real rest today and offer it as prayer.

A cheerful heart makes good medicine (Proverbs 17:22)

"A cheerful heart makes good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones."Proverbs 17:22 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: Ancient wisdom knew body and spirit affect each other. This verse observes how body and spirit interact, and it lays no blame on anyone who is ill. Laughter, friendship and sunlight are gifts. Use them.

Pray it: Ask God for one moment of real joy today, and notice it.

Talk to your doctor as well. Depression and anxiety are illnesses, never a verdict on your faith, and the Church holds every suffering person in God's mercy (CCC 2282-2283). See Catholic help for depression and Catholic grief support.

7. Bible Verses About Healing of the Soul

The Bible treats sin as the deepest sickness and Christ as the physician of souls. The Church calls Confession and Anointing the two sacraments of healing (CCC 1421).

By his wounds we are healed (Isaiah 53:5)

"But he was pierced for our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought our peace was on him; and by his wounds we are healed."Isaiah 53:5 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: The fourth Servant Song, read every Good Friday. Matthew applies this chapter to Jesus' healings (Matthew 8:17). Catholics read it as healing of the whole person, begun now and completed in the resurrection.

Pray it: Hold a crucifix. Pray, "By your wounds, heal me."

You were healed by his wounds (1 Peter 2:24)

"He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live to righteousness. You were healed by his wounds."1 Peter 2:24 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: Peter applies Isaiah 53 to sin. The healing he names first is the soul's. Some preachers read "you were healed" as a guarantee of physical cure today; Peter's own context is forgiveness and new life.

Pray it: "You bore my sins. Help me live to righteousness today."

Create in me a clean heart (Psalm 51:10)

"Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me."Psalm 51:10 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: David's prayer after adultery and murder. "Create" is the word of Genesis 1. Only God can make a heart new.

Pray it: Pray it as your Act of Contrition before confession.

Those who are sick need a physician (Mark 2:17)

"Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."Mark 2:17 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: Jesus is at dinner with tax collectors. He calls himself a doctor. Being a sinner qualifies you for his care.

Pray it: "Physician of souls, I am sick. Come to my table."

If we confess our sins (1 John 1:9)

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."1 John 1:9 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: Forgiveness rests on God's faithfulness. Catholics receive this promise in Confession, where Christ heals through the priest.

Pray it: Book a confession this week. Go.

Do not wait to start praying

No one knows the day or the hour (Mark 13:32). Get anointed, go to confession, and build a daily rhythm of prayer now, while you have strength. 8. Bible Verses for When Healing Does Not Come

When healing does not come, the Bible offers company, grace and a promise, and it lays no blame on you. Many faithful people in Scripture stayed sick. Lack of healing is never proof of weak faith, and anyone who tells you otherwise is wrong.

My grace is sufficient (2 Corinthians 12:7-9)

"A thorn in the flesh was given to me. ... Concerning this thing, I begged the Lord three times that it might depart from me. He has said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.'"2 Corinthians 12:7-9 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: The great apostle prayed for healing three times and was refused. The Catechism cites this to show that even intense prayer does not always obtain a cure (CCC 1508).

Pray it: "If not healing, then grace. Make it sufficient."

I left Trophimus sick (2 Timothy 4:20)

"Erastus remained at Corinth, but I left Trophimus at Miletus sick."2 Timothy 4:20 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: Paul healed many, yet left his own co-worker sick. Paul himself first preached in Galatia "because of weakness in the flesh" (Galatians 4:13), and Epaphroditus "was sick nearly to death" (Philippians 2:27). Faithful people get sick.

Pray it: Pray for everyone in your ward or waiting room tonight.

Jesus wept (John 11:35)

"Jesus wept."John 11:35 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: At Lazarus' tomb, minutes before raising him, Jesus wept with Martha and Mary. He knew the ending and grieved anyway. He weeps with you.

Pray it: Let yourself cry in prayer. He is crying with you.

Filling up what is lacking (Colossians 1:24)

"Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and fill up on my part that which is lacking of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the assembly."Colossians 1:24 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: Christ's sacrifice lacks nothing. He lets us join our sufferings to his for others. This is the Catholic practice of "offering it up", and St. John Paul II taught it in Salvifici Doloris (1984). Your pain can become prayer for someone else.

Pray it: Offer today's pain for one person by name.

Not worthy to be compared (Romans 8:18)

"For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which will be revealed towards us."Romans 8:18 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: Paul weighs suffering against glory and calls it no contest. Your pain is real; Paul sets it beside what is coming.

Pray it: "Show me a glimpse of the glory."

No more pain (Revelation 21:4)

"He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more. The first things have passed away."Revelation 21:4 (WEBBE)

Context and meaning: This is the final healing every Christian is promised: the resurrection of the body. Every healing on earth is a preview. This one is permanent.

Pray it: Pray the Creed slowly, stopping at "the resurrection of the body".

9. How Do Other Christians Read the Healing Verses?

Christians agree that God can heal. They disagree about how often, how, and what Scripture promises.

  • Pentecostals and charismatics pray expectantly for healing and lay on hands. Catholics share much of this through the Catholic Charismatic Renewal.
  • Word of Faith preachers teach that healing is guaranteed by Isaiah 53:5 and must be "claimed". When it does not come, the sick are often told they lacked faith. That teaching wounds people and ignores Paul, Timothy and Trophimus.
  • Many Reformed Protestants hold that miraculous gifts ceased with the apostles, though they pray for the sick.
  • The Orthodox celebrate Holy Unction, a sacrament of healing close to the Catholic Anointing.

The Catholic position: God still heals, sometimes miraculously, and the Church investigates claimed cures carefully, as at Lourdes. Whether Isaiah 53 promises healing to everyone now is covered in our guide on how to pray for healing.

10. How to Pray These Verses: Lectio Divina for the Sick and Caregivers

The best way to pray Bible verses about healing is lectio divina, the slow reading in which Scripture "becomes prayer" (CCC 1177). It works in a hospital bed, a waiting room or at a bedside.

  1. Read. Pick one verse. Read it slowly three times, aloud if you can.
  2. Meditate. Which word stays with you? Picture the scene: the leper kneeling, the woman reaching for the hem.
  3. Pray. Ask plainly for what you need: healing, strength, sleep, courage, good news.
  4. Rest. Two minutes of silence. Let Christ sit with you.
  5. Act. Take your medicine, keep the appointment, call the priest, or let someone help you.

Too tired to read? Listen. Pro's audio-guided prayer sessions for healing are made for that moment, $49 once with a 30-day money-back guarantee. For words when you have none, see our Catholic prayers for healing.

A prayer for healing from Scripture

Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed. Lord, if you want to, you can make me clean. Only say the word. Bless my doctors and nurses, and guide their hands. If healing comes, I will thank you. If it does not come yet, let your grace be sufficient for me, and keep me close to you until the day you wipe away every tear. St. Raphael, pray for me. Amen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most powerful Bible verse for healing?

No verse works like a formula, because healing is God's free gift. The verses Catholics pray most are Jeremiah 17:14, "Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed"; Exodus 15:26, "I am the LORD who heals you"; Psalm 103:2-3; and James 5:14-15, the basis of the Anointing of the Sick.

Does God promise to heal everyone?

God promises to heal his people completely in the resurrection (Revelation 21:4). In this life he heals some people physically and not others. St. Paul left his co-worker Trophimus sick at Miletus (2 Timothy 4:20), and the Catechism notes that even the most intense prayers do not always obtain healing of every illness (CCC 1508).

What does "by his wounds we are healed" mean?

Isaiah 53:5 foretells the suffering servant whose wounds heal his people. St. Peter applies it to healing from sin (1 Peter 2:24), and St. Matthew applies the same chapter to Jesus' healing miracles (Matthew 8:17). Catholics read it as Christ's Passion bringing healing to the whole person, begun now and completed in the resurrection.

Is it a lack of faith if I am not healed?

No. Lack of healing is never proof of weak faith. St. Paul begged three times to be freed from his thorn and was told "My grace is sufficient for you" (2 Corinthians 12:9). Some of the holiest saints lived with illness until death.

Should I stop my medicine if I am praying for healing?

No. Never stop a medicine or treatment because you are praying. Scripture says the Lord created physicians and medicines (Sirach 38:1-4), and the Catechism teaches that we must take reasonable care of our health (CCC 2288). Pray and keep following your doctor's advice.

Which Bible verse is the basis of the Anointing of the Sick?

James 5:14-15 is the main basis: the sick person calls for the elders of the Church, who pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. The Church also sees the sacrament foreshadowed in Mark 6:13, where the apostles anointed the sick with oil.

Which Bible translation is quoted on this page?

Quotations come from the World English Bible, British Edition, which is in the public domain. It renders the divine name as LORD and includes the deuterocanonical books, such as Sirach, that Catholics read. Punctuation is lightly adjusted for our house style.
